Stephen King's definition of a Kindle: "A gadget with stories hiding inside it.
What's wrong with that?"
The Amazon Kindle is Amazon's New revolutionary portable
book reader that can wirelessly downloads books, newspapers,
magazines and blogs. The Kindle has a crisp, high-resolution
electronic paper display which looks and reads like real paper
- even in bright sunlight.
But the Kindle is more than a portable book reader and can
best be compared to a PDA. For it has a QWERTY keyboard and
you can search the Kindle Store or use the "free built-in access"
to one of the best sources of information in the world: encyclopedia
—Wikipedia.org. You also have access to the Oxford American
Dictionary right on the device.
Amazon uses its own wireless delivery system called Amazon Whispernet
which uses the same 3G network as advanced cell phones. This is
only available in the U.S. (excluding Montana and Alaska at time of
writing) - this portable book reader can download books wirelessly
thru the high-speed data network (EVDO) so there's no need for
hot-spots or WiFi. Keep in mind, there are no monthly wireless bills
or service commitments for users of the Kindle. Major Plus!
Amazon is offering over 90,000 books which you can purchase in
the Kindle store at cut-rate prices, usually $9.99 a book. In addition,
you can download hundreds of the best magazines, newspapers and blogs
- you can get these subscriptions auto-delivered wirelessly.
"Buy a book and it is auto-delivered wirelessly to you in less
than one minute."
At only 10.3 ounces the Kindle is lighter than most paperback
books... it has six "Adjustable Text Sizes" which for all
those aging baby boomers could be Kindle's strongest selling
point and the major advantage of owning one.
There's a Glare-free screen that's usuable in bright sunlight
- according to Amazon, they use:
"Paper-like Screen while utilizing a new high-resolution display
technology called electronic paper, Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white
screen that resembles the appearance and readability of printed paper.
The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays
the ink particles electronically. It reflects light like ordinary paper
and uses no backlighting, eliminating the glare associated with other
electronic displays. As a result, Kindle can be read as easily in bright
sunlight as in your living room."
There's relatively long battery life, if you have the wireless
turned off, you can read the device for a week or more without
recharging. If you use the wireless, you will have to recharge
approximately every other day. The Kindle takes two hours to
fully recharge.
The Amazon Kindle holds around 200 titles or books. You
can also email your pictures and word documents
(.JPG, .GIF, .BMP, .PNG) to Kindle for easy viewing
anywhere.
Kindle Reviews
So far the Kindle is getting some very good reviews,
Amazon's own customer ratings for this product has
been solidly in the plus column. Some major Authors
(like Stephen King) have OK-ed the reading device but
they probably all have a vested interest in anything
that will get people reading and buying more books.
Perhaps, some of the negatives would be the hefty
price tag. Ouch! And you can ONLY buy books from
the Amazon-run Kindle store, not anywhere else.
It is also not as yet a truly portable PDA as it was
designed mainly for downloading and reading books.
Despite these reservations, demand for the Kindle
has been very strong, there is a long waiting list,
those wishing to purchase the device have to wait
over a month or so before delivery. (At time of writing)
Underlying the whole issue is the access to
wireless Internet and how Amazon is using the
selling of content to pay for it. Chances are
the Kindle will mutate; programs will be added
or other uses found for it rather than just
reading/buying books. Such as uploading/downloading
PDF files to your private Kindle email address.
This device may be more than it seems at first
glance, much more.
The Kindle may prove to be a revolutionary device that
defines how we read books and other content in the
immediate future. Nothing wrong with that!
