USB or Universal Serial Bus is the high speed serial port which allows for up to 127 peripherals to be connected to your notebook or computer.
You can add or remove devices without powering down your system. There are two kinds: USB 1.1 - up to 12Mbit/s and USB 2.0 - up to 480Mbit/s. USB 3.0 theoretical max speed of 625MB/s, which is supposed to be 10x faster than USB 2.0
If you have the choice, it would be wise to go with USB 3.0 enabled laptops and computers, as this will give you a faster tranfer of data. Other options include FireWire and eSATA connections which can be faster in some cases or applications.
