Can This Simple Ranking Factor Deliver First Page Google Rankings?

If you make your living from search engine marketing, you will probably already know this simple key ranking factor, which in most cases, will deliver a first page listing in Google's all important search results. In other words, if you want your site on that first page of Google, following this simple rule or marketing tactic will usually get you there - every time.

Actually, depending on the competition for your targeted keywords, obtaining this vital ranking factor will usually land your site in the #1 spot in Google. Even against stiff competition, a little related backlink building, will make your site competitive.

What is this powerful ranking factor?

It's quite straightforward, simply have your exact keyword or keywords in your domain name. If you want to rank high for your keywords, have those exact keywords in your domain name and title for your site.

Side Discussion
Seomoz.org does a great analysis of Google's Ranking Factors and it is always vital to examine all the data and opinions on these factors. Over the last few years, we have seen "on-page and site metrics" take a much bigger role in the whole scheme of things. They are also predicting that "exact keyword domains" will decrease in importance in the future... so you should look at all sides of this issue.

Even Post-Panda, we are seeing Google rank these exact keyword sites at the top of the heap. Go with the popular ".com" domain name and you shouldn't have any problem getting to that vital first page of Google.

This is probably due to the SEO benefits of having your exact keywords in each link or URL pointing to your site. Obviously, unlike using anchor text links and other linking practices, the search engines can't penalize you for using your own domain. Since your domain name carries your essential keywords - build a few valuable backlinks from related quality sites and your site will rise faster than sites which don't have the exact keywords in the domain name.

Internet Marketing

Besides, it's common practice in site design to have a link back to your home or index page, on every other web page on your site. This alone will build up your ranking juice, especially if you promote interior pages and not just the home page in your link building efforts.

However, the above marketing strategy does have a few drawbacks or obstacles, which have to be overcome if a marketer wants to take full advantage of this Google freebie.

1 - You have to pick the right valuable keywords which deliver both the traffic and the sales. This will take some serious keyword research to find those "long-tail" keyword phrases which convert into a sale. One simple indication if a phrase is commercial, just check the number of paid Ads when you search for your phrase in Google, Bing or Yahoo.

2 - Your chosen keywords or domain name must get enough traffic from the search engines to make it feasible. Use WordTracker or Google's External Keyword Tool to discover how much traffic your chosen keywords receive each month - both local and global. Also don't ignore valuable related keyword phrases which can also be a source of traffic - especially once your site is established.

3 - You will find the most valuable keyword phrases are already taken but check to see if it would be worth your while to buy the domain from the owner. Keep in mind, there are constantly new trends and keywords coming into play each day and it is often those marketers with their eyes on the ball, who reap the rewards.

4 - While some unscrupulous marketers do acquire domains with a popular brand or trademark included in it, this can lead to legal problems and one would strongly advise against this practice unless you have written permission from the vendor or brand name in question.

5 - Building 10s or even 100s of sites with their own domains can be rather costly so you will need to find inexpensive hosting services and a way to quickly build your sites and content. Post-Panda, all your sites should contain all original "value added" content and something your visitor wants and needs.

6 - Another remote problem, ICANN the body which governs domain names, may open up "top level" domains which don't need any .com, .net, .org... suffixes at the end. These higher level domains will probably out-rank the common .com domains in the future. However, these top level domains will be costly and probably won't apply as much to multi-word or long tail domains.

As the web evolves, we are seeing marketers and companies, snatching up a whole array of all the related keyword phrases in their niche. This is a savvy business strategy to obtain most, if not all, of the valuable search engine traffic for their particular market or niche.

Obtaining the exact keyword domain can be a very effective way to quickly get your site and domain on the first page of Google and keep it there. It is one of the quickest ways to get all that valuable targeted search engine traffic from Google. So, are you using this simple marketing tactic with your business?

Update - Google with one of its latest Algo Updates, seriously under-cuts this Exact Match Domain strategy.
