Overall Assessment/Reviews ...Good to Very Good! Asus is quickly building a solid reputation for producing fast high quality gaming laptops. And the Asus G51J 3D Gaming Laptop is no exception. Asus is also seen as an innovator with it comes to computers and mobile devices - they basically created the Netbook Category with the introduction of the first Eee PC back in the fall of 2007. Now ASUS has again taken a leading role when it comes to full 3D gaming by producing one of the first gaming laptops to incorporate the Nvidia's 3D Vision technology and a 120Hz LED backlit LCD. The 120Hz display is needed in order to properly produce the twin images needed for True 3D rendering. However, as many reviewers have already noted, while the screen is 120Hz, it has only a rather low 1,366x768-pixel resolution. On a high-end gaming laptop you usually find a much higher resolution, 1,366x768 is something you would find on an 11-inch Netbook. But where this gaming laptop shines is in the 3D department, the lower resolution doesn't affect the spectacular 3D images, the main reason to consider this laptop in the first place. While most high-end gaming laptops have 3D effects, True HD 3D gaming is relatively new and took a big step forward when Nvidia introduced its 3D Vision Kit and technology for laptops and PCs. The Asus G51J has the powerful 1.6GHz Intel Core i7-720QM CPU which should handle most of the latest video games. Throw in the Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M GPU and you have a capable gaming system, although this machine is mainly geared to handling 3D gaming videos which are becoming more common. This said, the G51J can still give around 94 frames per second in in such video games as Unreal Tournament III at the 1,280x800-pixel level. And with 4GB of 1,066MHz DDR3 memory and two 320GB hard drives, the Asus G51J should satisfy most gamers who want a 3D system. The G51J also sports the ASUS exclusive "Power4 Gear Hybrid" technology, which lets gamers boost the performance by selecting the "Extreme Turbo" mode. You can also adjust your different power profiles to save power or energy for better battery life. It should also be noted the G51J has an illuminated keyboard, which is sort of a standard feature for custom top-end gaming notebooks. Perhaps, an even more fundamental question which has to be asked concerning this laptop, and it has nothing to with specs or performance levels. That question concerns the whole nature of whether or not 3D is a passing fad or something that's here to stay. We have seen 3D systems in the past and they have quickly faded into memory. However, with popularity of such movies as "Avatar" and "Alice In Wonderland"; 3D has made a strong comeback and is posed to be the next breakout technology for movies, TV programming and video games. If you embrace new technologies and like to be on the forefront of what's new, then the ASUS G51J 3D gaming laptop may be just the perfect fit for you. Pros: Great Nvidia's 3D Vision technology and a 120Hz LED backlit LCD for excellent 3D gaming. Fast 1.6GHz Intel Core i7-720QM CPU with turbo boost. Cons: The 1,366x768-pixel resolution is low for a high-end gaming laptop. Bit pricey but you do get Full HD 3D gaming on a mobile laptop. Conclusion: Excellent 3D gaming laptop - one of the first to have Nvidia's 3D Vision technology and a 120Hz LED backlit LCD display.
