ICANN’s New Generic Domains Could Change Everything

ICANN’s New Generic Domains Could Change Everything

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I don’t see or hear
much discussion about the new upcoming ICANN changes
to how domains will be named in the future.

Starting next year – between January 2012 to April 2012 –
companies can apply for a “generic” or “dot anything”
domain. Instead of using say a “.com” “.net” “.biz”…
for a price tag of $185,000 a company can buy a domain
such as “www.hotels” or “www.hotel”, which will probably
mean anyone searching on the web for a hotel room could
just type “hotels” into their browser and the site holding
this domain will pop-up.

Assuming of course, ICANN (The Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers) approves this generic
domain and lets someone buy it… the same could
also apply for other lucrative domains such as
cars, loans, banks, gifts… and even brand name domains.

The SEO fallout could be very significant if Google and
the other search engines start listing these Top Level
domains first in their rankings. And how can they not,
because these top domains will quickly grow a whole
list of backlinks if they follow the pattern set by
the web.

As web users get used to just typing in directly what
they’re looking for on the web, this traffic alone could
result in the loss or gain of billions, if not trillions
of dollars.

It also probably means anyone holding a “.com”, “.net”,
“.org”, “.biz”… type of domain, has just seen that
domain being devalued because they are no longer the
top domains. Especially, when it comes to the now perceived
top-level “.com” domains – millions of these domains will
have their values lowered.

These “dot coms” are no longer “king of the hill” and on the
web being at the very top, means everything.

How all this plays out will be very interesting to watch.
How many generic domains are created and what kinds of
keywords ICANN will accept could be especially worth
watching.

After the vote, Chairman of ICANN’s board of directors,
Peter Thrush stated: “Today’s decision will usher in a new
internet age. We have provided a platform for the next
generation of creativity and inspiration. Unless there
is a good reason to restrain it, innovation should be
allowed to run free.”

The key will be the web user’s acceptance of these new
domains… will they still want to use the “.com” at the
end of urls. Or will they stop using the search engines
less and less, by going directly through the browser to
the site for the keyword listed.

The only problem with that, as most affiliate marketers know,
the most lucrative keywords are the “long-tail”, more
descriptive phrases… it is unlikely someone is going
to buy “florida vacation rentals” as a generic domain,
unless browsers are redesigned to go directly to
www.floridavacationrentals, even if you just type in
“florida vacation rentals”.

Of course, one way this could play out, a company would
buy the “www.rentals” domain and then have sub-domains
pointing to the different markets. Such as “florida.rentals”
or “vacation.rentals” and so on.

For big companies and some small ones, if they can afford
the hefty price, it could be a very good way of protecting
their trademarks. Just type in Sony and you go to the Sony
site. Just type in Apple and you go to the Apple site…
if nothing else, it will be faster.

But I have a feeling these new “generic” “dot anything”
domains will play a much bigger role with it comes to SEO
and your rankings in the search engine. They will make a
lot of difference in the amount of traffic your domain receives.

In actual fact, it could really change the web as we know it…

It will no longer be open and available to everyone, because
while the Internet will still be open to any Tom, Dick or Mary,
who has $8 or $10 to buy a domain… the real prize domains
will only now be available for those elite few who can afford
the hefty $185,000 price tag and the $25,000 annual fee.

Does Your Site Need An SEO Checkup?

Google Spot!

Since Google launched its Panda Update earlier this
year and all the follow-up changes after it, many people
believe that your site’s SEO has become more important.

That your “on-page factors” must be right or as best
as they can possibly be.

This all has to do with the quality of your site and your
webpages. It seems like Google is more forcefully judging
that quality and your site now has to pass a few more hurdles
or it will be lowered in the rankings.

Regardless of Google, having all your SEO factors done
“right and proper” won’t hurt your site. The faster your
page or site loads helps everyone. Making your site
easier to find by the search engines and your visitors
helps everyone. Having your site or page fully optimized
also helps everyone.

Besides, knowing everything you can possibly know
about your site will also help you, especially when
it comes to SEO.

Wouldn’t it be good to know these things about
your site…

– Number of Backlinks?

– Keyword Density?

– Right Meta Tags?

– Do You Have A Sitemap?

– Are Your Images Optimized?

– Is Your HTML Compressed?

– Do You Have H1 Heading Tags?

– Is Your Site Protected From Hackers?

… and many more factors or issues which
could determine the quality of your site
in the eyes of the search engines, especially
Google.

While not perfect, here’s a nice free site
where you can quickly do an SEO Checkup.
They will not only show you what’s wrong, but
give you concrete ways to fix the problems.

number of backlinks are just about even, sometimes
just improving these small SEO issues can raise
your site above your competition.

Google Caffeine – Are You Ready For It?

……………………………..
Update to the Post Below:

The Google Caffeine Sandbox URL has now been taken down by Google.
While Caffeine has not been rolled out (as of yet) it will be live in at
least one data center before it’s fully implemented – according to Matt Cutts
in an interview given here:
http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2009/11/10/

We have assurances that Caffeine won’t be fully introduced until after
the holidays – if we can take Google at its word.
…………………………..

We were first told about Google Caffeine last summer and
it caused a big stir. Well, at least among webmasters
and search engine marketers, the general public couldn’t
care less!

However, if you’re a webmaster or doing any type of
promotion/marketing on the web you better become
familiar with Google Caffeine. It’s in your best
interests to find out all you can about it because
it may affect your site’s rankings and traffic.

What is Google Caffeine?

It is the codename given Google’s next-generation
search infrastructure which is supposedly going to replace
Google’s current index system. In other words, this is
Google’s updating or modernizing of how it indexes pages
on the web. It is supposed to be much faster, more accurate
and more relevant than the current Google.

Why should you care about Google Caffeine?

If you’re a webmaster or marketer Google Caffeine will
affect your site’s rankings once it comes on stream.
That is, your current keyword rankings which you now have
in Google may not be the same in the new improved Google
Caffeine.

Is there a way to check my keyword rankings in the new
Google Caffeine?

Perhaps, all indications are that using the developer preview at

http://www2.sandbox.google.com

will give you some indication of what your Google Caffeine
rankings will look like. This URL is backed up by Matts Cutts
(main Google spokesperson) on his blog. And checking your site
and keywords rankings thru this sandbox is probably a good idea.

However, word of caution, Google NEVER lays all of its cards on
the table – nor should it, especially when you’re running a
multi-trillion dollar company whose life-blood is online search.
It must protect the integrity of its main asset which is
it’s index.

Actually, I am just hoping this Google Caffeine or parts of it
is not already live… because I did a lot of checking with the
URL above and my sites go up with the new index. Presently, I
am not seeing much movement in my rankings. A few have gone down
and a few have gone up – just the general normal swing that I see
from week to week in Google.

Will Google launch Caffeine during the vital Holiday Season???
In the past, a few major Updates have come just before Christmas.

When Google Caffeine actually hits is anyone’s guess, but
it’s probably coming soon, if not already implemented in some
stages. The more important question for you and your site – will
it be a mild seasonal storm or full-blown Category Five Hurricane?

Here’s how you can do a simple check:

1. Open up two browsers or windows on your computer:

http://www.google.com

and

http://www2.sandbox.google.com

2. Compare & Check how many links you get when you place
these into both Google search engines:

links:www.yoursitename.com
link:www.yoursitename.com

links:http://www.yoursitename.com
link:http://www.yoursitename.com

3. Now, do the same for your major keywords and compare
the results.

I hope both your site and keywords still hold-up in Google’s
new search engine.
