Google Bowling – The “Not So Nice” Side Of SEO?

Google Spot!

Almost everyone has heard of Google Bombing… where
enough people plant countless links to get a keyword
phrase to rank in the top spot in Google for some
silly phrase, like getting George Bush to show up for
“miserable failure”… usually this is done in a
light-hearted matter.

Google Bombing has been around for a long time and
Wikipedia even has a whole section on it:

https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_bomb

But there is another nasty practice called Google Bowling
and this one is much more sinister in nature and is not
much fun for its unfortunate victims.

What is Google Bowling?

Google Bowling is planting or creating low quality (spammy)
links pointing to a site in order to lower its rankings in
Google. This practice is usually done by your competitors
to undermine your site in the “eyes” of Google.

While Google has maintained in the Past that “inbound links”
don’t negatively affect your rankings… since you obviously
have no control over these links. However, many webmasters have
seen the negative side of getting spammy links and how these have
lowered their rankings in Google.

Why would someone do this?

If you’re in a very competitive and lucrative niche, just a
movement up or down a few ranking spaces – can result in a loss
or gain of thousands of dollars in sales. Business is war and
some people will do everything they can to beat the competition.
Including spending money to buy spammy links for their competing
sites!

Now, there is a whole discussion on the web about whether or not
Google Bowling even works? Google maintains they can counter this
practice within their algorithm or even manually, but I believe
it does work and after the Panda Update which is all about
“site quality”… this nasty practice is even more effective
for undermining your competition.

And I am not alone in this belief, Neil Shearing has been following
this issue for some time. He covers it in a very good blog post
located here:

Basically, all sites could be at risk, even yours. So the more
you know about this nasty BlackHat SEO practice the better you
will be able to protect yourself and your site. To learn more

5 Free Keyword Tools To Help Boost Your Traffic

Keywords are the Key!

Believe it or not, it took me several years to discover the
true power of keywords and how they worked on the Internet.
They really are the keys to all that free search engine traffic,
but you must target the right keywords or you won’t succeed.

Finding those right “keyword matches” for your site or content
can be a major task. You must do your keyword research. You must
discover which keywords bring in the “right traffic” that turns
into a lead or a sale.

Over the years, I have found close monitoring and study of your
website traffic logs will give you many of the valuable keyword
phrases people are using to find your site or content. Then making a
list of these phrases and creating direct content (webpages, articles,
posts, videos…) related to these keyword phrases will boost your
rankings, especially in Google.

For example, it’s no secret that I target the laptop/computer
niche market. I build content around the different keyword phrases
that searchers use when they’re buying a laptop or computer… such
as business laptops, student laptops, gaming laptops… and the list
of keywords is almost endless.

I am constantly searching for new keyword phrases which bring in
those all-important sales and leads.

Besides your traffic logs, I also find using Keyword Elite by Brad
Callen very good, but there are countless free keyword research tools
which you can use instead. I thought it would be useful to give you
a few of these below to help you find, sort and manage your keywords:

Will Google Introduce One-Page Infinite Scrolling For Search?

Will Google Introduce One-Page Infinite Scrolling For Search?

Google Spot!

Google is constantly making changes to how they
rank pages AND how they display their search results.
Webmasters and site owners can do a lot to affect the
outcome of the first one by building more links,
increasing the quality of their content and practicing
better SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques.
However, besides picking the title and description,
webmasters have little control over how Google displays
your listings in their organic search.

Recently, we have seen Google introduce Instant Search,
automatic fill-ins, page previews… could more exciting
changes be coming down the pipeline?

Rumors are flying that Google may adapt a one-page layout,
like they now have for Google Images, and introduce
infinite scrolling with a static menu on the left
always in view. This could possibly change Google’s
SERPs dramatically, to say the least.

Just imagine, you have a listing/ranking for your site
in Google but it’s currently in the 30 or 50th spot.
You have a really catchy title and description which
attracts a lot of clicks if only people could get the
chance to view it. Now, if Google sees the light and
goes with infinite scrolling, searchers will now have
a greater chance of seeing your listings and clicking
through to your site. More traffic, more visitors and
more sales.

Let’s face it, most people don’t click beyond the first
page and very, very few click through to the third or
fourth page. While I have seen slightly different percentages
stated, I read in the Warrior Forum that “89% of all traffic
goes to the webpages on the first page. And 42% of that goes
to the page ranked number 1. The last-place finisher on page
1 gets 3%.”

While top 5 organic results will still probably get the
majority of the traffic… but in the slight chance that
Google does introduce this new format, many more Google
users will see your listing in the 30th or 50th spot.
Might be a small learning curve but searchers will go deeper
into the search results if all they have to do is scroll down,
without clicking those extra pages.
