Recent Google Changes That Affects Your Rankings & PageRank

On the surface, with it’s different spokespersons and Webmaster Tools,
Google is becoming much more transparent when it comes to how they rank
content on the web. They are openly discussing such things as:


1. Reasons Why Your PageRank On the Google Toolbar Would Drop?


Besides having fewer links pointing to your site, there are many more
reasons why you may lose PageRank. You may have made internal
linking changes which are affecting your PR. The Googlebot may
have trouble accessing all of your content. Google may believe
you’re selling links and have penalized your site. There may
be canonicalization issues with the www vs non-www versions of
your site.

2. Google May Let You Know About Any Automatic and Manual Spam Action Against Your Site?

Google is becoming much more open about reporting both automatic and
manual spam penalties taken against your site. Webmasters may now find
out if their site is violating Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and how to
fix any problems. Google says it will become more active in solving these
issues for webmasters.


3. Webmasters Can Even Make A Reconsideration Request To Get Their Site Back On Track.


If you do have find yourself or your site having an automatic or spam
action against your site, you can use the “Reconsideration Request” after
you have fixed the problems. Google says it will be more open and transparent
on letting you know about the status of your site.

“Now, if your site is affected by a manual spam action, we may let you know
if we were able to revoke that manual action based on your reconsideration request,”
explained Tiffany Oberoi and Michael Wyszomierski (Google’s Search Quality Team)
in a blog post. “Or, we could tell you if your site is still in violation of our
guidelines. This might be a discouraging thing to hear, but once you know that
there is still a problem, it will help you diagnose the issue.”

4. Google Browser Extension Which Lets Searchers Block Your Site.


Google has announced that it is letting searchers, through a browser extension,
to block sites that they don’t like. Now Google is using this data and incorporating
it into their algorithm to lower these blocked sites in their search results.
One of Google’s search quality engineers Johannes Henkel has stated: “We’ve also
started incorporating data about sites people have blocked into our general search
ranking algorithms to help users find more high quality sites.”

For those webmasters in very lucrative niche markets, this is extremely scary
stuff and wide open to abuse. One can even imagine “less than honest” people
hiring or utilizing whole armies of paid searchers blocking the sites of their
competitors.



5. Google’s Aim To Return “Single Page” or “View All” In Their SERPS.


This may be an important ranking factor since it is something all webmasters
can easily fix. Instead of placing a long article or a lengthy piece of content
on several pages – place this content on a single page. Google is placing more
emphasis on these View All pages and are ranking them higher. This all has to
do with improving the searcher’s overall experience and providing quality content
in their SERPs.

These are just Five recent Google changes or issues which every webmaster should
be aware of and acting on – if any of these affects your site. Google is THE most
important search engine and it is in your best interest to keep Google as Happy
as is Humanly possible. Just make it your daily mantra.

Like Most People Expected, Google’s +1 Button Gains More Muscle


When it was first launched by Google, most people believed (myself included)
that the +1 Button was going to be a major player in the web of the future.
Especially when it comes to getting more traffic and rankings.

Simply put, if you want more traffic – using the +1 Button has become
a no-brainer.

While the role this button will play in your Google rankings have yet to
be fully determined. But for the most part, you can bet the farm that Google
will be using it as a ranking factor, if they are not already.

Perhaps, more importantly, just this week Google has upgraded or increased
the importance (usage) of their +1 Button by letting you share content
to your Google+ Circles. In other words, this button now becomes Google’s
version of the “like” button.

And we all know how important the Facebook “like” button is for getting traffic
and creating instant “buzz” around your content.

“Clicking the +1 button is a great way to highlight content for others
when they search on Google,” says Google’s spokesperson Vic Gundotra.
“But sometimes you want to start a conversation right away, at least
with certain groups of friends. So beginning today, we’re making it easy
for Google+ users to share webpages with their circles, directly from
the +1 button. Just +1 a page as usual and look for the new ‘Share on
Google+’ option. From there you can comment, choose a circle and share.”

When you share content through the Google +1 button, you can customize
‘+snippets’ attached to these shares with a link, an image and a description
in the sharebox. This is sort of a markup where webmasters can easily create
rich annotations for your content on Google Search. Tagging your pages with
the right descriptions and keywords will help build your traffic and rankings
in your particular niche.

Since these recent developments, it has become more important than ever to
have the +1 Button on all your sites and pages. It will take some work,
especially if you have a lot of sites, but it is something I am now doing
with all my new content. I am also working on updating all my old pages
with not only the +1 Button, but also the Authorship markup since Google is
now including your photo and links to your Google Profile in their SERPS.




As for the Authorship markup, when you have content you want to tag with
your name/profile, you must include the (rel=”author”) to verify the content
as belonging to you and link it to your +Google Profile. This is what I use…

Keep in mind, you must link back from your Google Account to your site
to prove it’s yours and not someone trying to use your name. The proof
comes full circle.

I see many savvy webmasters and marketers are already using this Authorship
Markup as a way of making their links/content stand out in Google’s Search Results.

Will Google Introduce One-Page Infinite Scrolling For Search?

Google is constantly making changes to how they
rank pages AND how they display their search results.
Webmasters and site owners can do a lot to affect the
outcome of the first one by building more links,
increasing the quality of their content and practicing
better SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques.
However, besides picking the title and description,
webmasters have little control over how Google displays
your listings in their organic search.

Recently, we have seen Google introduce Instant Search,
automatic fill-ins, page previews… could more exciting
changes be coming down the pipeline?

Rumors are flying that Google may adapt a one-page layout,
like they now have for Google Images, and introduce
infinite scrolling with a static menu on the left
always in view. This could possibly change Google’s
SERPs dramatically, to say the least.

Just imagine, you have a listing/ranking for your site
in Google but it’s currently in the 30 or 50th spot.
You have a really catchy title and description which
attracts a lot of clicks if only people could get the
chance to view it. Now, if Google sees the light and
goes with infinite scrolling, searchers will now have
a greater chance of seeing your listings and clicking
through to your site. More traffic, more visitors and
more sales.

Let’s face it, most people don’t click beyond the first
page and very, very few click through to the third or
fourth page. While I have seen slightly different percentages
stated, I read in the Warrior Forum that “89% of all traffic
goes to the webpages on the first page. And 42% of that goes
to the page ranked number 1. The last-place finisher on page
1 gets 3%.”

While top 5 organic results will still probably get the
majority of the traffic… but in the slight chance that
Google does introduce this new format, many more Google
users will see your listing in the 30th or 50th spot.
Might be a small learning curve but searchers will go deeper
into the search results if all they have to do is scroll down,
without clicking those extra pages.
