Should You Use YouTube, Twitter, Facebook… In Your Marketing?

Should You Use YouTube, Twitter, Facebook… In Your Marketing?

First, I must admit to you that social media sites like Twitter, YouTube,
Facebook… are not my thing. I frankly don’t like them but that hasn’t
stopped me from using them to my advantage.

I find Twitter way too silly and Facebook way too nosy… the one in
the whole bunch which I like the best is YouTube and even that comes
with a lot of qualifiers.

But it’s not so much the sites themselves, it has to do with age and
old habits. I can remember a time when marketing on the web didn’t
include any of the above because they just didn’t exist. Life was a
lot simpler then – all you had to be concerned about was creating great
content and building your keyword rankings.

However, you have to change and adapt with the times or you will quickly
lose out to those who can change their marketing on a dime. So despite
my own feelings, I use all these social networking sites and tie them
in to all my online promotions.

One of the underlying strategies web marketing demands is that you firmly
place your content in the whole mix of what’s happening on the net. The
more you connect your content to all involved parties, the less Google
can ignore your content.

The biggest mistake most beginning webmasters and companies make – they
create a perfectly good site and place it on the web. Then they patiently
wait for something to happen…

…many are still waiting!

That’s not how it’s done, at least not in my case. You have to become
pro-active, you have to get out there and actively promote your site.
Write articles, join forums, make comments, tweet your content, create
related videos, build a fan base, build your lists… in other words,
get involved with the web.

The more you get involved and the more you can get your content tied
up in the whole discussion of the web, the faster you will succeed.

These new social/networking sites makes it very easy to get your content
noticed and into the whole mix. Google can’t ignore your content if
1000’s are re-tweeting it, Google can’t ignore your video if 1000’s of
tubers are giving it the thumbs-up, Google can’t ignore your latest
article if 1000’s are clicking the “like” button…

…you will get Google’s attention.

This is all-important because Google controls 70% – 80% of the search
traffic and getting listed at the top of Google is still the key to
succeeding on the web. These sites can help you get that Google traffic
and that’s the main reason you should use them.

Now, the one I like the best is YouTube, not because it is owned by
Google, but a well made video can jump instantly onto the first page
of Google for some very popular/lucrative keywords.

No SEO, no backlinks, no on-page optimization… your video is on the
first page and in some lucky cases, stays there for months at a time.

And this doesn’t take into consideration that people are now by-passing
the search engines and using sites like YouTube to do their searches –
finding their answers in videos, rather than using an ordinary search engine.

Another reason why I really like YouTube is that you can quickly build
a community around your content. You can quickly build your list of
subscribers and friends… all making comments and adding video responses
to your channel.

Plus, these channels can be super targeted… you can have one on web
marketing, you can have one on list building… in other words, you can
have a channel on each topic area of your site.

Then there is the whole nature of videos themselves, people like them
and they like getting their information in video form. It is more universal
and you will reach more viewers, many wouldn’t be caught dead reading
your article but will watch an interesting video based on that article.

In addition, I believe YouTube will only grow in importance in the future.
This is based on some recent developments – CNN reports that Google plans
to spend 100 million on original programing to create 20 premium channels.

And recently when Larry Page took back the CEO job at Google, he created
vice presidents in seven key areas – YouTube and video was solidly in the
mix with search, social, Chrome, mobile, local and ads. This shows that
Google is placing a lot of importance and emphasis on YouTube going forward.

Google Page Speed Tester – Use It To Improve Your Site

Google Page Speed Tester – Use It To Improve Your Site

Google Spot!

Ever since Google made it’s latest Panda (Content Farm) Update, all webmasters
must not only be worried about the actual text or content on a web page; but
also about how that page is designed and how that page performs. In other words,
the actual layout and design of your site has become more important if you want
higher rankings in Google.

Now Google has been telling us for a long time that how fast a page or site loads
will affect your rankings. Since Google’s goal is to offer its users a quality
experience, a slow loading page is just not the way to proceed and they will rank
it lower.

Page Speed is now something every webmaster must get right or fix if they have
a slow loading page.

I have been scrambling to fine-tune my main site since the recent Google Update.
My search traffic from Google dropped around 5% – 10%, which is something to be
concerned about and I am re-designing many of my pages to reflect the new changes.
I am dropping some low-quality pages or rather pages which had little original
content on them. I am also making sure I ONLY add unique content to my site, with
the exception of YouTube videos, which I still add for variety and it also helps
to keep the visitor on my pages longer (another ranking factor which seems to
have increased in importance).

But I have mainly been concerned about the speed of my pages and trying to find
ways to lower the load times. Now Google has put out a Page Speed Tester which you
can use to see how Gooole ranks your page with regards to speed. They will give
you a number/score out of a hundred, but also tell you ways in which you can
improve your page speed.

Images are usually a big problem when it comes to speed times. You need to keep
these low in size and also host them on your site or server. Sometimes this is
not possible if you’re into affiliate marketing since most companies like to do
“pixel tracking” which displays an invisible image on your site… but any image
on your page which is called/pulled up from an outside site will take time.

Leverage Browser Caching is one of the High Priority Factors which Google likes
to see with your images. From what I can gather you have to put some code/directions
in your .htaccess file which will tell the browsers to do this.

I did a lot of searching but found a solution which worked. To fix this issue I
used or put the following code in my .htaccess file on my site.

ExpiresActive on
ExpiresByType text/html “access 2 day”
ExpiresByType text/css “access 2 day”
ExpiresByType application/javascript “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType text/plain “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/jpeg “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/gif “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/png “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType application/pdf “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType application/x-shockwave-flash “access 1 month”
ExpiresDefault “access 2 days”

Usually takes a day for this code to work… at least this was the case with my
main site. Checking the URL the next day, Google doesn’t show this as a Priority
speed problem with my site.

Of course, there are other things Google tells you to change on your page in
order to fix any speed issues. Getting your pages as optimized as possible is
never a bad thing – especially when it comes to Google. And since this is all
“on-page optimization” it can be easily done by webmasters themselves.

I have long learned that the more you give Google what Google wants, the higher
your rankings will go. Fix these speed issues and this is one more ranking factor
you don’t have to worry about.

Here again is that Google Page Speed Tester:

Google’s Panda Update and SEO

Google’s Panda Update and SEO

Google Marketing Spot!

Whenever Google does a major update to their extremely
complex algorithm, the mathematical formula which runs
their search engines and rankings, we have winners and
losers.

Most often it is the losers you hear about… crying
foul that the Big G is treating them unfairly with
the latest changes. Panda, which also has been dubbed
Farmer Update by many, since it supposedly deals with
“content farms” and “low quality” sites – has created
a lot of fallout.

But does new changes affect how you do your SEO?

Well, yes and no. Producing great original unique
content should still the main goal of any website,
and this has not changed.

What has changed is that webmasters must take
some steps to ensure their content is not “judged”
or “seen” as a content farm or of low quality.
In other words, you can have great content but
if it is splattered with ads and banners… this
could affect your SEO and rankings, at least within
Google.

In the same light, if your great content is poorly
presented with hard to read text… poor navigation
and loads very slowly, your great content can be
penalized by Google. You must give the searcher
coming from Google a good visitor experience or they
can lower your rankings.

Google has been very open to what they expect on your
site… but this hasn’t stopped the losers of this
recent update from complaining. In some cases, their
arguments are justified, they have been wronged, but
in many situations, the lowering of rankings worked
properly – not exactly what some webmasters want
to hear.

Google now be judging your whole site, rather than
each webpage separately. This is very important because
a few low-quality pages on your site, could lower your
overall site’s rankings… ouch!

You could have 90% excellent content but have 10% that’s
downright crappy – so it’s time to clean up your site
and present to visitors ONLY great content.

Now, I have written 10 extra points on the new update
which you should consider following. A lot of these
are standard SEO tactics which you should be using
anyway. Others are slanted to reflect this new
Panda Update.
