\nICANN’s New Generic Domains Could Change Everything<\/b>

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I don’t see or hear
\nmuch discussion about the new upcoming ICANN changes
\nto how domains will be named in the future.<\/p>\n

Starting next year – between January 2012 to April 2012 –
\ncompanies can apply for a “generic” or “dot anything”
\ndomain. Instead of using say a “.com” “.net” “.biz”…
\nfor a price tag of $185,000 a company can buy a domain
\nsuch as “www.hotels” or “www.hotel”, which will probably
\nmean anyone searching on the web for a hotel room could
\njust type “hotels” into their browser and the site holding
\nthis domain will pop-up.<\/p>\n

Assuming of course, ICANN (The Internet Corporation for
\nAssigned Names and Numbers) approves this generic
\ndomain and lets someone buy it… the same could
\nalso apply for other lucrative domains such as
\ncars, loans, banks, gifts… and even brand name domains.<\/p>\n

The SEO fallout could be very significant if Google and
\nthe other search engines start listing these Top Level
\ndomains first in their rankings. And how can they not,
\nbecause these top domains will quickly grow a whole
\nlist of backlinks if they follow the pattern set by
\nthe web.<\/p>\n

As web users get used to just typing in directly what
\nthey’re looking for on the web, this traffic alone could
\nresult in the loss or gain of billions, if not trillions
\nof dollars.<\/p>\n

It also probably means anyone holding a “.com”, “.net”,
\n“.org”, “.biz”… type of domain, has just seen that
\ndomain being devalued because they are no longer the
\ntop domains. Especially, when it comes to the now perceived
\ntop-level “.com” domains – millions of these domains will
\nhave their values lowered.<\/p>\n

These “dot coms” are no longer “king of the hill” and on the
\nweb being at the very top, means everything.<\/b><\/p>\n

How all this plays out will be very interesting to watch.
\nHow many generic domains are created and what kinds of
\nkeywords ICANN will accept could be especially worth
\nwatching.<\/p>\n

After the vote, Chairman of ICANN’s board of directors,
\nPeter Thrush stated: “Today’s decision will usher in a new
\ninternet age. We have provided a platform for the next
\ngeneration of creativity and inspiration. Unless there
\nis a good reason to restrain it, innovation should be
\nallowed to run free.”<\/b><\/p>\n

The key will be the web user’s acceptance of these new
\ndomains… will they still want to use the “.com” at the
\nend of urls. Or will they stop using the search engines
\nless and less, by going directly through the browser to
\nthe site for the keyword listed.<\/p>\n

The only problem with that, as most affiliate marketers know,
\nthe most lucrative keywords are the “long-tail”, more
\ndescriptive phrases… it is unlikely someone is going
\nto buy “florida vacation rentals” as a generic domain,
\nunless browsers are redesigned to go directly to
\nwww.floridavacationrentals, even if you just type in
\n“florida vacation rentals”.<\/p>\n

Of course, one way this could play out, a company would
\nbuy the “www.rentals” domain and then have sub-domains
\npointing to the different markets. Such as “florida.rentals”
\nor “vacation.rentals” and so on.<\/p>\n

For big companies and some small ones, if they can afford
\nthe hefty price, it could be a very good way of protecting
\ntheir trademarks. Just type in Sony and you go to the Sony
\nsite. Just type in Apple and you go to the Apple site…
\nif nothing else, it will be faster.<\/p>\n

But I have a feeling these new “generic” “dot anything”
\ndomains will play a much bigger role with it comes to SEO
\nand your rankings in the search engine. They will make a
\nlot of difference in the amount of traffic your domain receives.<\/p>\n

In actual fact, it could really change the web as we know it…<\/b><\/p>\n

It will no longer be open and available to everyone, because
\nwhile the Internet will still be open to any Tom, Dick or Mary,
\nwho has $8 or $10 to buy a domain… the real prize domains
\nwill only now be available for those elite few who can afford
\nthe hefty $185,000 price tag and the $25,000 annual fee.<\/p>\n
