One of the very first articles I ever wrote on
\nInternet Marketing had to do with RSS and it was
\nentitled “10 Reasons To Put RSS On Your Site.”
\nThat was in 2004 and RSS was somewhat new and
\nmany webmasters were just beginning to place
\nblogs and RSS feeds on their sites. If you do
\na search in Google, you can still find that
\narticle on around 2,000 sites.<\/p>\n
Most people now refer to RSS as “Really Simple
\nSyndication” – although it originally stood for
\n“Rich Site Summary” and was a very simple way
\nof summarizing and syndicating your content
\nin real-time to all interested parties.<\/p>\n
RSS had its early beginnings with Netscape in
\n1991 which introduced the first version of RSS
\n(RDF Site Summary). Later versions would be
\nintroduced and made popular by Dave Winer of
\nScriptingNews and Userland fame who is considered
\nby many to be one of the major founding fathers
\nof RSS.<\/p>\n
Most people today associate RSS with blogs and
\nblogging. You can read RSS content by using an RSS
\nfeed reader or “aggregator” which can be desktop
\nor web-based. Some common feed readers include
\nFeedDemon, My Yahoo!, iGoogle and Firefox (Live
\nBookmarks). You subscribe to your favorite RSS
\nfeed by clicking the small icon on your favorite
\nblog or site and then when fresh content is
\npublished via RSS your reader can immediately
\nretrieve and display it for you.<\/p>\n
RSS is a very simple way of keeping up to date
\nand in contact with your favorite site or topic.
\nIt makes staying informed easy to do and it provides
\nsite\/blog owners a simple way of distributing their
\ncontent.<\/p>\n
One can’t but wonder has RSS lived up to all that
\nearly hype?<\/p>\n
Perhaps that question can only be answered by looking
\nat the popularity of blogging and the role it now plays
\non the web. No one can deny blogs and their accompanying
\nRSS feeds carry tremendous weight, no matter which way
\nyou measure it. Can anyone now imagine the World Wide
\nWeb without blogs?<\/p>\n
But the importance of RSS goes beyond just blogging,
\nwe tend to forget how important it is for all the
\nnew social media sites like Digg, Technorati, Reddit…
\nand not to forget fast-growing applications like
\nTwitter.<\/p>\n
People also forget RSS feeds play a major role in
\nonline retail and affiliate programs. For example,
\nyou can get an RSS feed of all the latest Amazon
\nproducts to place on your site. Many major online
\ncompanies now have these product feeds to help promote
\nand sell their wares.<\/p>\n
XML and RSS have blended so seamlessly into many browsers
\nand operating systems most users are blissfully unaware
\nthey’re even using RSS. Maybe that’s how things should
\nbe; with RSS, the ever-present workhorse, quietly doing its
\njob behind the scenes.<\/p>\n
RSS is just as important now as it was five years ago
\n– actually its influence and presence has only grown
\nstronger over the years. If you have not fully embraced
\nRSS and placed it on your site and in your online marketing
\nyou’re missing out on one of the best opportunities to
\nspread your message on the web.<\/p>\n
RSS is here to stay and even has its own advisory
\nboard to help with the technical and programming side
\nof RSS. They also list a very handy “RSS Best Practices
\nProfile” for any webmaster wishing to create their own

Why should you use RSS?<\/p>\n
Well, the list of reasons is quite long but RSS can help you:
\nsyndicate your content in real-time, sell your products, build
\nyour list, gather fresh content, promote your company and boost
\nthat one vital element everyone needs more of on the web – traffic.
\nFor those who have taken full advantage of RSS it has delivered
\nin more ways than one for it has truly turned into that Golden
\nGoose with the Midas complex. RSS has simply proven beneficial
\nto those users who have fully embraced it.<\/p>\n
Now, you still don’t really need 10 reasons to put RSS on your
