EzineArticle Top 20 Author Showcases

Hey, I am still proud to be an article writer and marketer, despite all
the recent uproar about the whole idea of using online articles to get
your message on the web. And I was a little more than pleased to see I
had made it into EzineArticles’ Top 20 Expert Author Showcases… in
the #3 spot!

For me, article marketing is not dead and I refuse to believe otherwise.
It is still an effective marketing tool, especially if you use unique
articles and carefully monitor your anchor text links in your resource
boxes.

However, I would be foolish to believe article marketing hasn’t taken
a serious beating in the last year or so. This is mainly due to Google
and its recent algorithm changes – mainly the Panda and Penguin Updates.

In the Panda Update, articles took a serious blow, because websites and
webmasters no longer wanted to display or reprint articles on their sites
since Google and Panda believed them to be of lower value/quality because
they weren’t original.

With the Penguin Update, articles faced an even greater firestorm because
Google was now targeting and de-ranking exact keyword matches in the
resource box links of these articles. Sites did not want to be seen by
Google as having spammy links and countless high quality articles simply
disappeared from the web. You even had some sites deleting millions,
yes millions of articles, from their sites. Other sites displayed articles
but with no backlinks.

Good, informative high quality writing and articles will always be important
on the web. And despite what Google wants, syndicating content is still not a
crime. But writers do have to be careful not to violate Google’s Guidelines,
especially when it comes to backlinks and keyword anchor text, if they still
want to rank in Google.

As for making EzineArticles Top 20… this was out of some 200 showcases featured
on the EzineArticles’ blog since 2005. The blog is run by Chris Knight who owns
the popular EzineArticles.com site. Keep in mind, EzineArticles is probably
the top article directory on the web. It has over 462,195 expert authors submitting
articles, the popular site also has an Alexa traffic rank of 374 and a Google Page
Rank of 6.

Google Refreshes The Penguin Update For The Third Time

Google Refreshes The Penguin Update For The Third Time

Google did a data refresh of its Penguin Update last week on Oct. 5th,
impacting around 0.3% of English queries. Matt Cutts tweeted about the
new refresh in his Twitter account:

Weather report: Penguin data refresh coming today. 0.3% of English queries
noticeably affected. Details: goo.gl/AF5kt

— Matt Cutts (@mattcutts) October 5, 2012

Some has suggested that “noticeably affected” means those search results
in Google which are “above the fold” or basically the top five spots in organic search.

With this new refresh, some webmaster are announcing huge recoveries, here’s one listed here.
Others are doubting these recoveries from Penguin. This site saw no noticeable change in
its rankings after the refresh, despite removing over 40k of low quality links. We also
have seen no sign of Google’s “Disavow Link Tool” and it’s probably not coming any time
soon – if ever.

The SeachEngineLand folks are naming these updates in the following manner:

Penguin 1: April 24, 2012 (3.1%)
Penguin 2: May 26, 2012 (less than 0.1%)
Penguin 3: Oct. 5, 2012 (0.3%)

This is probably a much better way of keeping track of these Google Updates…
as Google seems to launching major changes almost weekly, if not daily. We also
saw a recent update to Panda and a new major EMD (Exact Match Domain) Update
which targets those low quality sites which hopes (or who had) benefitted from
having the exact keywords in the domain name. This EMD Update noticeably
affected 0.6% of English-US queries in Google search.

Now let’s see – we now have 5 different filters for your search results in
Google – at least these are the five which we know about:

Panda
Top Heavy
Penguin
Pirate
EMD

Top Heavy is a filter which weeds out content/pages/sites with too many ads
above the fold. Pirate is a filter dealing with sites/content which receives
too many complaints about copyright issues or rightful ownership. As far as
we know, all these new filters work independently of each other and once
Google creates a filter it is periodically updated or refreshed – sometimes
monthly or earlier. Follow Matt Cutts on Twitter and you will get a good
idea when a new refresh is launched.

New Site Explorer Tools From Majestic SEO

New Site Explorer Tools From Majestic SEO

The MajesticSEO site and tools have always been a favorite of mine… especially
when they introduced the Citation and Trust Flow charts. These charts lets you
quickly judge a site’s linking profile at a glance.

Now Majectic SEO has introduced three new tools to their Site Explorer offerings:

Anchor Text Tab – This shows your site’s anchor text links and helpful data.

New Links Tab – This shows your site’s new links coming to your site each day.

Lost Links Tab – This shows which links your site has lost and gives probable reasons.

In a Post-Penguin world created by the ever-changing Google, links have become
even more important than they should be in a normal online world. Google has
nearly killed “normal link” building with its Penguin Updates and site owners
must now be aware of all the links flowing into their site.

Bad links, even those not created by the site owner, can wreck havoc on your
rankings in Google. Since Penguin, webmasters have been scrambling to remove
“bad links” and keep their rankings in Google.

Now these webmasters have a few more tools from Majestic which they can use
to monitor their sites and those all important links. Keep track of all your
links, the ones you have lost and also the anchor text pointing to your site.
All vital information which is needed to keep your site in the “plus” column.
