o My Internet Marketing Strategies For 2010

…….

Each year around this time, as I close out another year of working
online, I try to sum up what has worked for me over the past year
and what new things I will try in the upcoming year. The only reason
you should care about any of this, some of my marketing strategies and
tactics could be something that would also work for you.

Stranger things have happened!

Coming from a teaching background, I know sometimes it’s the smallest
suggestions that provide the spark to bigger things. It’s the simple
exchange of ideas that can really change how we do something or how
we approach a problem. More importantly, if you see the mistakes of
other marketers, you can avoid them in your own marketing and save
yourself a lot of disappointment and/or headaches.

For me last year was not an easy time to be marketing online, I believe
the recession in the States has finally taken a big toll, not in the number
of sales or revenue generated online because those have never been higher.
However, we are seeing the fallout of all those laid-off workers,
many of them are turning to the web for a source of income – therefore
you have increased competition like never before.

In my marketing niches especially, I have seen a ten-fold increase in
the number of competitors competing for the same sales. And it’s not
just the small-time webmaster or marketer – major corporations are now
targeting the online market in a much more savvy SEO way. It’s one thing
if your competitor is some joe-blow down the street, it’s a totally different
ballgame if your competitor is Dell, Apple or Sony.

These multi-national companies have the resources and very deep pockets
to pull everything out when it comes to SEO. If they want a number one
ranking in organic search, they can usually get it through white hat link
building and keyword positioning. Once these guys start moving into
your keyword phrases, you’re going to have to settle for second place,
if not lower.

Now you can still rank in the top spot and you can still make the sales
but your competition is much stiffer and more powerful – the end result,
you have to work harder to make the sales and get that top spot.
For me it has meant building more sites and doing much more aggressive
promotion in 2009, more articles, more press releases, more videos…
keeping my sites and promoted affiliate products front and center has
been a little harder.

I find myself concentrating on several important niches, rather than a broader
range of products which I would like to be doing… and which I have more
successfully done in years past. Now, because of the stiff competition,
I have to focus more of my time on just a few lucrative niches and keep
those keywords at the top. The end result – my online marketing has become
a lot tougher and harder to do, which is not necessarily all bad, since
I believe I am becoming a better marketer because of this fact. Just
complicates things a bit and all those easy sales of the past is a distant
memory.

Besides this increased competition, two other major events or factors
have overshadowed last year and I would like to talk about them in
some detail here because, I believe, going forward these two factors will
play major roles in online marketing. It might help you to be aware
of them and proceed accordingly.

New FTC Guidelines

First, the new FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Guidelines which came
into effect on December 1st of this month has everyone in online
marketing rattled up and running more than a little paranoid. How these
new rules will be enforced regarding “Testimonials and Endorsements”
could bring significant changes to how marketers can market online.

Major Internet Marketers are closing sites and giving away their products
for free in an attempt to bring their marketing into line with the
new rules. For affiliate marketers like myself, full disclosure and
transparency must now be a part of ALL your online affiliate links.

This could have some serious consequences for those marketing online
and I myself have added seals to my sites stating these are affiliate
marketing sites… how all this plays out in 2010 will be very interesting
to watch. Especially as we see test-cases taken to court and discover
what these new guidelines and rules will mean for hard-working online
marketers, who are only trying to make an honest buck.

Over the last two or three years, I have focused my own online marketing
towards “real products” mainly in electronics and away from “info-products”
which many people look down upon for many reasons. This move towards
selling real goods had more to do with earning income, rather than any
real dislike for info-products on my part…. selling real products and
services has become much more lucrative for me and I am only following
the money. Like you would!

Since I am doing affiliate marketing, how the new FTC guidelines and
rules play out, has my full attention and I am keeping my eyes peeled
to this issue in 2010. All of my own info-products/guides from all my
sites have and will always be free… I believe all information should be
free and not sold. Old teachers never die, they just end up broke!

The second major issue of the moment is Google.

Ever since Bing has come on the scene, Google has gone into overdrive.
At first I thought it was just me being a little sensitive to Google
since most of my traffic and income comes directly or indirectly from
Google.

But according to a recent CNN piece Google has released over 68 new
products within the last month or so. Major among them is the introduction
of “Real-Time Results” into their search index and if that wasn’t enough
Google is introducing Google Caffeine which is a major overhaul of its
search engine. I have told you about Caffeine in the last few emails that
I have sent.

Google is really changing and 2010 will be a watershed year for everyone
connected with Google. How Caffeine rolls out and how it affects your
site’s search results will have a full impact on how well you do in the
coming months… I have been holding my breath since last summer, waiting for
this monster to drop. Could be a smooth transition or a total roller-coaster
ride for my sites. Regardless, Google is going to make 2010 very interesting
for every online marketer.

They have even started suing certain companies for using the Google
name and trademark to scam people. Google has become such a force
that its no wonder, scammers have used it to rip people off and those
scammers should be held accountable. But for legitimate marketers who use
the Google name or talk about Google on their web pages or in their
marketing… it can get somewhat scary. You have to be extra careful
of what you say.

Google also has many new free products or services which are turning
a few heads, I especially marvel at the new “Google Goggles” for
mobile phones. Just take a picture and you get the Google results
instantly – no typing, just point and click.

I just envision, countless clueless teenagers suddenly being empowered
with knowledge and wisdom. Could do more for education since the
invention of the printed word. Talk about scary!

Anyway, Google is indeed, the one to watch in 2010.

……………………….

Here’s My Quick “To-Do” Marketing List For 2010

1. Google Caffeine – Totally examine and monitor how Caffeine affects all
my sites and major keyword phrases for which I currently rank on the first
page for in Google. Work out and/or create marketing strategies to counter any
negative effects Caffeine has on my marketing.

2. Bing/Yahoo – This search engine will produce more traffic in 2010 for
everyone involved so it can’t be ignored, no matter how important Google
becomes, B/Y will still deliver the goods. Check and try to improve my rankings
in this non-google search engine.

3. Videos Are It! – Videos have become a very powerful marketing tactic on
the web. I am planning to take full advantage of this powerful marketing medium
by making more site and product-related videos to be placed on YouTube and
around the web.

4. Press Releases – These have become extremely important in the new
“Real-Time Search” web. Getting your links and information onto the web
and into the search engines has never been easier. I am planning on doing
many more Press Releases in 2010.

5. Article Marketing – Writing simple “How-To” articles and placing them
all over the web, is still a very effective marketing technique, especially
when it comes to SEO and getting related one-way links back to your site.
High-quality articles perform the best, so I will be concentrating on producing
less, but hopefully more powerful high-quality articles.

6. Twitter – This has become a major marketing medium on the web.
One that I plan to fully examine and to take more seriously in 2010. Great
list building program which I would like to exploit in the coming year. I am
also expanding my use/link building efforts with all the social bookmarking
sites such as Del.icio.us, Digg, Stumbleupon, Facebook… I believe these
bookmark/links will play a greater role in SEO in the new revamped search engines.

7. Unique Content Links – Writing unique content and placing it on other
related sites around the web is probably the best “off-page” SEO which you can do.
I plan on exploring this marketing technique in 2010 and reaching more sites by
offering unique quality content out to any takers. A win-win situation that you will
see more and more of in the coming years.

8. Revenue Streams – Fully boost my existing revenue streams and start new ones,
especially placing most of my marketing efforts on those streams which give me
residual or recurring income. Expand my targeted “keyword list” to fully take
advantage of those revenue streams. Continue my major keyword battles full force.

9. Cross-promotion With Other Marketers – Doing joint marketing promotions
with related sites and marketers is a great way of building traffic and credibility
on the web. I plan to do more of these in 2010, especially interviews with
major online marketers or with the affiliate products/services I promote.

10. Keyworded Domains – Having your major keyword in your domain name
or URL will become even more important as the web evolves… which is only
common sense. You can rank higher in the search engines for that keyword
phrase if it’s in the domain. I have already bought a few new keyworded
domains which I will build new sites for in 2010. Full steam ahead.

One other consideration for 2010, which I am seriously thinking about has
to do with this newsletter. I am thinking about giving it up entirely!

Basically, over the years I have given valuable marketing information away,
and I have always applied this knowledge to my own online sites and marketing.
Unfortunately, I am also giving away valuable information to my competitors
who are competing against me! Not a very smart idea and an even dumber one
now that my competition has increased tremendously.

If this newsletter suddenly stops and you no longer get it, it will mean
I have discontinued it and gone into stealth mode. But you can still follow
me on Twitter…

TweetGlide – How The Big Guys Market Online

TweetGlide – How The Big Guys Market Online

This week I thought I would do something that’s a little
different and give you a simple case-study of how
the big guys actually do their online marketing.
Hopefully, it will give you a better understanding of how
these marketers earn the big bucks. It just doesn’t all
happen by pure luck or even by access to friends with
very large lists.

These guys operate on a set marketing formula that’s
tested and proven to work. They just have to come up
with a special product or service to plug this formula
into it in order for it to work. The more unique the product,
the more successful their marketing campaign will be.

In particular, I would like to dissect the whole marketing
system connected with a new Twitter desktop application
introduced just a few days ago by Mike Filsaime, a well known
and very successful online marketer. He has many products,
including other viral programs similar to this one, Instantbuzz
and ListDotCom comes readily to mind.

Since I have spent the last 7 years studying marketing tools
and systems with my two main marketing websites, I have become
extra critical when a new marketing tool comes along. And I find
myself becoming even more cynical as I enter middle age – comes
with the territory I guess!

But I was really impressed with TweetGlide for several reasons.

First, it ties your online marketing into one of the hottest programs
on the web at the moment – Twitter. Second, I have always had
a fondness for desktop applications mainly because it puts your
program and promotions directly on the computers of its users
– sort of like in your face advertising.

For years, I have been promoting my own Desktop eCalendar
with my main site and I know these desktop applications
can bring in a lot of traffic. It is a way of directly
connecting with your site’s users. Tie it in with a popular
program like Twitter and you probably have a winning
combination on your hands.

Now, TweetGlide is a simple desktop application that
lets you get full enjoyment out of Twitter. It displays
your Twitter Tweets, Direct Messages, Favorites, Mentions…
it basically hooks you up to all your Twitter stuff on
your desktop. Basically it is very similar to TweetDeck
but with an advertising component thrown in.

It’s a handy little free program that you can download
and use. For those who would like to use it for marketing, they
can promote it to also earn a few dollars. Mainly through a
OTO (one time offer) of a premier membership upgrade
that people who download the application can purchase.
You don’t have to accept this offer – the program is
still free to download.

I personally don’t like OTOs (some people call them
One Time Rip-Offs) but they are an effective and accepted
way of marketing on the web and Mike Filsaime puts it to good
use here. I personally bought the upgrade myself because
I wanted to fully test out this system and like I said,
I have a fondness for desktop applications. I also see promising
marketing potential for this one but only time will
tell if it was worth the upgrade price.

Filsaime has also smartly tied this application in with
an upsell product which is his coaching program.
Often times this backend product is where the big bucks
are make – most savvy marketers offer a lucrative backend
upsell to all the primary products they sell or promote. The
really, really smart ones, make this upsell recurring or residual
in nature, so that they can receive revenues each month
or each year.

For those building lists, notice how this experienced
marketer is building his lists thru TweetGlide and
especially how it places confirmed buyers onto his VIP list…
great way to build customer loyalty and make repeat
sales. This is a key element to profiting from your
lists… you must divide up and target special subscribers
with offers matching their interests and buying habits.

Overall, TweetGlide is a handy little marketing machine
where users can advertise for free but you can also buy
sponsored advertising. It is a simple way to build a viral
element into your online marketing. This viral element
will fit in nicely with the whole viral nature of Twitter.

Plus, big-time marketers like Filsaime are savvy enough
to boost those viral elements with an attractive affiliate
program which may attract other big-name online promoters
and marketers. Roughly, 3000 downloads in under 24 hours,
were made with little promotion on Filsaime part. If this
thing goes totally viral, he will have an attractive and
lucrative program to add to his long list of successful products.

Ignoring all the marketing elements and sales pitches, you
still end up with a handy Twitter desktop application that
puts all your tweeting functions right on your desktop.
Don’t know if this will become as popular as TweekDeck
but it is definitely worth a look.

Moreover, I was really impressed with the quality and
design of TweetGlide. The video introducing it was very
professionally done. The TweetGlide interface is very
simple to use and can be easily customized to suit your
own preferences. In addition, the download and installation of
the desktop application went quickly and smoothly.

So check out the video which explains it all in
greater detail in the link below. Please be aware

New Guidelines For FTC Regarding Endorsements & Testimonials

Due to new FTC updated guidelines regarding endorsements
and testimonials which go into effect on 12/1/09, any
endorsement or testimonial must be transparent and the
reader or consumer must know you’re selling a product
if you’re endorsing it.

Or at least this is my reading of the new guidelines;
I am not a lawyer but I am an affiliate marketer so this
issue has me very concerned. Like all online marketers
I am trying to understand the new guidelines. You can
find some very helpful information at the FTC website.

I have disclaimers on all my sites but just saying
“Results not typical” or the stronger “These testimonials
are based on the experiences of a few people and you
are not likely to have similar results.” May not even
be good enough anymore; which is a little scary because as
an affiliate marketer you’re promoting third-party products
which may come with testimonials as part of the promotional
material you’re given.

I believe FTC and the new guidelines will help cut down
on outrageous claims and on those endorsements/testimonials
which try to deceive the consumer.

Again, I am not giving you legal advice regarding these
guidelines or how you should proceed. Just telling you
that you should be aware of these guidelines which are coming
into effect on the 1st of December.

Crashing The Traffic Party – How To Use The World’s Top Sites To Promote Your Own Site

BWMagic’s Internet Marketing News!

o Crashing The Traffic Party – How To Use The World’s Top Sites
To Promote Your Own Site

Most times, common sense is the only Internet marketing strategy you need.
All you have to do is use some simple reasoning to achieve your goals, many
times it is only a matter of using your head to figure out the easiest route
to success.

For example, one of the hardest obstacles to overcome for most webmasters
is getting enough traffic to their sites. You need traffic if your site is
to succeed – plain and simple. You must have traffic and lots of it.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize, in order to get traffic you must go to
the places/sites that have the majority of the traffic on the web. These top
sites command enormous amounts of traffic each day and they get thousands
of visitors each second.

So it stands to reason, you must put or place your site into this whole traffic
mix of these top sites. Fortunately, this is very easily done without too
much work on your part, but it may mean joining many of these top sites and
doing some self-promotion.

First up, you have to tackle the search engines which represent or controls
much of the quality traffic on the web. People use these sites to find what
they’re looking for on the net, you must get your site listed/ranked on these
search engines, especially Google.

Google is the number one site in the world and until Bing/Yahoo replaces it,
you must gear your site towards Google. This is not difficult, actually, it
is quite simple. One of the keys to getting listed and ranked well in this top
site of the web is quality unique content. Just create unique quality
content on your site and Google will notice you and send you traffic.

I like taking a holistic approach to Google, it is not simply a search
engine, it is much, much more. You have to tie your site into all the many
different facets of Google – use iGoogle to create your profile,
use Google Products to promote your products, use YouTube to promote
your videos, use Google News to promote your latest news or articles,
use Google Docs to promote your PDF files and ebooks, use Blogger to
promote your blogs and RSS feeds… and the list goes on.

By incorporating or totally immersing your site into the Google online
juggernaut, you will receive plenty of quality traffic. I also like to
connect my sites with the commercial side of Google by using Adwords
and buying search traffic. I also use Google Adsense on my sites to
off-set the cost of buying that traffic. Actually, truth be told, I spend
the majority of my time – adjusting, optimizing and promoting my content
within Google.

Why?

We have to go back to the common sense factor again, my traffic logs
and stats show that Google sends me around 80% of my traffic. It is
only natural that I concentrate on optimizing my site and content
to please Google. But that doesn’t mean I ignore the other search
engines or the other top sites on the web, just the opposite is true.

Mainly because Google has a complex algorithm they use to rank sites and
content on the web. One major overriding part of these 200 or so ranking
factors is how well your site is connected with other sites/content on the
web. Getting backlinks from high PR sites is vital for achieving high
rankings. Webpages are given PageRank from 0 to 10, with 10 being the best.

Now, by actively connecting/promoting your site within the top
sites on the web, you’re telling Google your site is important.
Moreover, web users are telling Google your site/content is important
and relevant. Getting backlinks on top sites like Wikipedia, YouTube,
About.com, Ask.com… will tell Google your content matters to web surfers.
Likewise, getting your content bookmarked in all the social networking
sites like Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Flickr, Twitter… will tell Google
and the other search engines your content is relevant.

Proving that your content is relevant will be one of the major keys
to getting top rankings, especially in Google. Therefore, connecting
your content with all the major sites on the web makes sense, no matter
how you view it. Having your content discussed, bookmarked and linked
to will make all the difference in the world to the success of your
site.

Now, as mentioned before, getting your site/content connected and linked
from these top sites is not difficult. Simply join many of these sites
and create profiles, submit content, add your links and so on. Another
way is to make it easy for your site’s content to be bookmarked in many
of these top social media sites. I like using a simple button like the one
from AddThis.com which makes it easy for your visitors to bookmark your
content for you. Again, common sense and simple practicality win the day.

So is your site well connected to the top sites on the web? Does
it have a presence in all these high volume traffic sites? If the
answer is no, then your site is probably missing out on a lot of
free traffic which it could be getting. Just make a conscious effort
to involve and connect your site/content with many of these top
sites on the web. You will be pleasantly surprised with the results
of your efforts. So start mingling now!
