Just when I thought Google couldn’t pull out any more
surprises – they start 2012 off by rolling out “Google Plus
Your World”. This really personalizes your Google search,
especially with it comes to all those Google+ profiles
and posts.

Your searches in Google can now relate directly to the
people and topics you care about in your life. Google will
now show “personal results”, “profiles in search” and “people
and pages” in their results and autocomplete.

Google is reasoning that behind each search query there
is a whole community which the searcher might want to
follow or join. It gives Google search a much broader
application when it comes to finding information on the
web.

Nothing wrong with that but…

Many are saying Google is too self-promotional by just
using their own Google+ system – why not include Twitter
and Facebook profiles as well? Actually, there are
several ongoing disputes regarding this matter and whether
or not Google has complete access to data from Twitter
and Facebook.

Here’s an interesting video with Google executive chairman
Eric Schmidt where he states they’re not favoring Google+
in the results. You can judge for yourself:

Regardless of this argument, a much more beneficial question
will have to be…

What does “Google Plus Your World” mean for your site’s traffic
and/or online marketing?

First, now more than ever, you simply have to have a Google+
profile for yourself or your company. The traffic and SEO benefits
are simply too great to ignore. You must have a Google+ account
and promote it along with all your other social profiles such
as Twitter and Facebook.

In addition, you should be making regular Google+ posts with
photos… as all these will now show up in Google search. This
is another fast way to get your content displayed on Google.

Keep in mind, once someone is logged into Google, their previous
clicked sites and activity will show up at the top of the
listings. This makes organic search and rankings less important
because any site can now be at the top; build up a large
active community around your site and you will get more
repeat traffic from Google.

Just like every savvy online marketer knows how to get their
content into Google News within minutes, now we also have
Google+ as a direct way into Google search. Marketers and
webmasters should take advantage.

This also opens up another door when it comes to marketing
on the web. As studies have shown, personal “product recommendations”
from friends and family do play a major role in what products
we finally decide to buy. Factoring in the whole new “Google Plus
Your World” element will give marketers another road to pursue.

All this can mean much more targeted traffic to your site
and a greater opportunity to build a list of prospects (community)
around your site’s topic. The same goes for any company
or site promoting their products on the web.

In the near future, we should all be prepared for Google’s
next moves. Especially in the area of Authorship Markup and
how it plays into these new Google+ changes to personal
search. In addition, be prepared for Rich Snippets to play
a major role in Google SERPs, but that’s another topic for
a future newsletter.

For now, everyone should be exploring Google+ and taking
advantage of what it can do for their site or company in Google’s
new “Plus Your World” universe. Just personalize Google’s
new changes to meet your own needs.

How To Use A Google Sitemap?

A sitemap is just a list of all the URLs or pages
on your site. Search engines use these sitemaps
to help index your site.

That’s basically what a sitemap is and what it does.

If you have a small site (less than 500 pages)
one of the fastest and simplest ways to get
or generate a sitemap is to use this site:

http://www.xml-sitemaps.com

Go to that link and put in your site’s URL
and it will generate a sitemap for you within
a few minutes. It will give you an XML file of
all the URLs on your site.

Upload your XML sitemap file to your server
where your site is located. Then check this
file in a few browsers such as Firefox,
Google Chrome… to see if it is displayed
properly.

Few other things you might want to do to make
sure search engines find your sitemap. You can
submit your sitemap to Google’s Webmasters Tool.

In addition, you can give a “Priority” to how
you want the search engines to rank your page
WITHIN your own site. Your main homepage would
be “1″ and the other pages can be prioritized
to the way you want them.

Of course, there is much more to Sitemaps then
this simple example. What if you have a site
which is constantly updating and adding pages
each day?

Then you’re probably going to have to install
a sitemap generator on your server – which
can get a little complicated, especially if
you’re not good with handling scripts.

Is This Google’s Boldest Move Against SEO Yet?

Years ago, when I first started with my online websites I
had no clue “whatsoever” about SEO or even keywords for that
matter. But it didn’t take me long before I was daily checking
my traffic logs to find out what “specific” keywords searchers
were using to find my site and webpages.

Naturally, most of my then modest traffic was coming from
Google, so I concentrated all my time on those keywords. I
soon found that visitors using certain keyword phrases clicked
my affiliate links more often than regular traffic… and a
large percentage of those clicks resulted in a sale or lead
for my promoted company.

This one technique is how I have earned my money from the web.

I took those targeted keyword phrases and wrote articles/blog
posts around those keywords to make sure my site or webpage
rank in the top 5 in Google for that phrase – the higher the
better. For long-tail (3 or 4 words) keyword phrases this is
quite easy because usually no one else is taking the time and
effort to rank for these keywords.

But the “key” to all this working is the search data in my
traffic logs coming from Google. What if Google suddenly
encrypted or kept this data secret? It would be game over
right?

Well, Google has done exactly that – started encrypting
certain keyword search data. At the moment, this encryption
is only being applied to around 10% to 12% of search data -
from those logged in members of Google search.

However, is this just the start of Google eliminating all
keyword tracking and referrer data returned to webmasters?

Google says no, this is just a “privacy issue” related
to their logged in members. They want to keep those
searches private.

Webmasters, SEOs and marketers are not so sure and doubt
Google will stop at just 10%… mainly because Google
usually rolls out stuff to test the waters before they
dive in completely. Is the same scenario happening here
- could we see the end of keyword tracking?

Even more alarming, Google has stated that their Adwords
customers will still get this keyword data. Now we can
see a much more viable reason Google is eliminating this
data. If marketers/webmasters can’t get this information
from free organic search, paying for this information
via Adwords can be more than economically feasible.

It also makes the Google Adwords program much more
valuable and attractive – remember, this is Google’s
bread and butter flagship. This ship has just become
much more golden.

Ouch Google! That Really Hurts… My Reactions To
The Latest Panda 2.5.2 Update

Last week, for the first time in over 10 years, one of Google’s updates
hit one of my sites. Most of my other sites weren’t affected and the ones
with the “keyword specific” domains actually when up in the rankings.
Also those sites which were narrowly focused on one topic or subject
area fared the best.

This was the Panda 2.5.2 update as some webmasters are calling it.

Matts Cutts of Google, warned there would be “minor flux” in the
listings over the next couple of weeks, but there is nothing “minor”
about it, especially if it was one of your sites that lost the traffic.

I take these Updates in stride and try to keep my sense of humor about
the whole thing, but it usually means I have to do more press releases,
unique articles, videos, blog posts… to get some of the affected keywords
back up higher in Google. However, this couldn’t come at a worst time
as we’re heading into the lucrative holiday shopping season.

Years ago, Google did the same thing, made major changes to its listings
just about now. They promised webmasters they wouldn’t do the same thing
again, but here we go…

I honestly believe that when Google makes changes to their algorithm and
put these adjustments live – they have no way of predicting the outcome
and how drastic it will be for some very good sites.

On the surface, with it’s different spokespersons and Webmaster Tools,
Google is becoming much more transparent when it comes to how they rank
content on the web. They are openly discussing such things as:


1. Reasons Why Your PageRank On the Google Toolbar Would Drop?


Besides having fewer links pointing to your site, there are many more
reasons why you may lose PageRank. You may have made internal
linking changes which are affecting your PR. The Googlebot may
have trouble accessing all of your content. Google may believe
you’re selling links and have penalized your site. There may
be canonicalization issues with the www vs non-www versions of
your site.

2. Google May Let You Know About Any Automatic and Manual Spam Action Against Your Site?

Google is becoming much more open about reporting both automatic and
manual spam penalties taken against your site. Webmasters may now find
out if their site is violating Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and how to
fix any problems. Google says it will become more active in solving these
issues for webmasters.

3. Webmasters Can Even Make A Reconsideration Request To Get Their Site Back On Track.


If you do have find yourself or your site having an automatic or spam
action against your site, you can use the “Reconsideration Request” after
you have fixed the problems. Google says it will be more open and transparent
on letting you know about the status of your site.

“Now, if your site is affected by a manual spam action, we may let you know
if we were able to revoke that manual action based on your reconsideration request,”
explained Tiffany Oberoi and Michael Wyszomierski (Google’s Search Quality Team)
in a blog post. “Or, we could tell you if your site is still in violation of our
guidelines. This might be a discouraging thing to hear, but once you know that
there is still a problem, it will help you diagnose the issue.”

4. Google Browser Extension Which Lets Searchers Block Your Site.


Google has announced that it is letting searchers, through a browser extension,
to block sites that they don’t like. Now Google is using this data and incorporating
it into their algorithm to lower these blocked sites in their search results.
One of Google’s search quality engineers Johannes Henkel has stated: “We’ve also
started incorporating data about sites people have blocked into our general search
ranking algorithms to help users find more high quality sites.”

For those webmasters in very lucrative niche markets, this is extremely scary
stuff and wide open to abuse. One can even imagine “less than honest” people
hiring or ultizing whole armies of paid searchers blocking the sites of their
competitors.

5. Google’s Aim To Return “Single Page” or “View All” In Their SERPS.


This may be an important ranking factor since it is something all webmasters
can easily fix. Instead of placing a long article or a lengthy piece of content
on several pages – place this content on a single page. Google is placing more
emphasis on these View All pages and are ranking them higher. This all has to
do with improving the searcher’s overall experience and providing quality content
in their SERPs.

These are just Five recent Google changes or issues which every webmaster should
be aware of and acting on – if any of these affects your site. Google is THE most
important search engine and it is in your best interest to keep Google as Happy
as is Humanly possible. Just make it your daily mantra.

Link Wheels have been around for as long as the Internet
has existed. Countless webmasters and marketers use them
to boost their keyword rankings, especially in Google.

Now with the advent of so many free popular “Social Media”
sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Linkedin…
and the ever increasing presence of blogging sites such
as Blogger, LiveJournal, WordPress…

And we won’t even mention such free user-generated content
sites such as Hubpages, Squidoo, Associated Content… and
the list is endless.

With all these free high PR and high traffic pulling sites,
Link Wheels are becoming more popular than ever but…

What are Link Wheels?


Link Wheels are just as the name suggests, you create a
wheel of links around your main site or page. Many marketers
refer to this main site as their “money” site or page, one
which brings in the sales and leads.

Anyone can take the free sites listed above and create a
link wheel around their main site. Using only “original content”
you can create PR (PageRank) drawing links and funnel this
PageRank to your main site or page. In the process, boosting
your main site’s rankings in the search engines.


How Do Link Wheels Work?


There are many ways to create Link Wheels, some of the simplest
ones, can be built by using your profile links in such social
networking programs as Facebook, Google+ or Google Profiles,
Linkedin, MySpace… link or connect all of these together
and link them to your main site.

Likewise, you can create a link wheel by connecting all your
free blogging programs such as Blogger or Blogspot, LiveJournal,
WordPress… and/or combining these with user-generated sites
such as Hubpages, Squidoo, Associated Content, and so on.

Or you can make a wheel with a combination of all of these
types of sites. The sky is the limit but one…

Word of Caution


Google is constantly cracking down on any manipulation
of their rankings, so your link wheels must appear natural
or they will be considered “spam” and filtered out. However,
if you use high quality original content on these sites or
pages, Google will have to list and follow them, especially
if you build up very active communities around your social
networking sites or programs.

Another important way to avoid any ranking penalties is NOT
to use the same “keywords” in your anchor text. Your anchor
text is the underlined/clickable part of the link. Use different
keywords in these anchor links to avoid the appearance of
keyword spamming.


Should You Use Link Wheels?


This is entirely up to you. They don’t take much work, except
for creating the original content. You can easily build these
within a few hours of work. Most people already have or are
using such sites as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, MySpace, Linkedin…
it is just a matter of linking these together and linking them
back to your main site – which most webmasters already do
anyway.

While I didn’t consciously go out and create Link Wheels per se,
I have many different versions of these wheels with my 9 or 10
sites which I run on the web. These link wheels can be an easy
way to boost your rankings and traffic.

As you probably have figured out already, this can be a complicated
matter, depending on how detailed or complex you want to make

Google is constantly making changes to how they
rank pages AND how they display their search results.
Webmasters and site owners can do a lot to affect the
outcome of the first one by building more links,
increasing the quality of their content and practicing
better SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques.
However, besides picking the title and description,
webmasters have little control over how Google displays
your listings in their organic search.

Recently, we have seen Google introduce Instant Search,
automatic fill-ins, page previews… could more exciting
changes be coming down the pipeline?

Rumors are flying that Google may adapt a one-page layout,
like they now have for Google Images, and introduce
infinite scrolling with a static menu on the left
always in view. This could possibly change Google’s
SERPs dramatically, to say the least.

Just imagine, you have a listing/ranking for your site
in Google but it’s currently in the 30 or 50th spot.
You have a really catchy title and description which
attracts a lot of clicks if only people could get the
chance to view it. Now, if Google sees the light and
goes with infinite scrolling, searchers will now have
a greater chance of seeing your listings and clicking
through to your site. More traffic, more visitors and
more sales.

Let’s face it, most people don’t click beyond the first
page and very, very few click through to the third or
fourth page. While I have seen slightly different percentages
stated, I read in the Warrior Forum that “89% of all traffic
goes to the webpages on the first page. And 42% of that goes
to the page ranked number 1. The last place finisher on page
1 gets 3%.”

While top 5 organic results will still probably get the
majority of the traffic… but in the slight chance that
Google does introduce this new format, many more Google
users will see your listing in the 30th or 50th spot.
Might be a small learning curve but searchers will go deeper
into the search results if all they have to do is scroll down,
without clicking those extra pages.

So far I am really impressed with Google+, it’s clean,
simple and very easy to use. As I have said before, I am
not into the whole “social” scene as it is not my cup
of tea, but I do have a lot of these programs like Twitter,
MySpace, YouTube, Facebook… to promote my websites and
online marketing.

I have never been a very big user of Facebook, I log in
once or twice every two months or so… only to discover I
have missed someone’s birthday and people are ticked off
at me. Besides, one of my major problems with Facebook, I
can’t separate my business contacts with my close friends and
family. You simply don’t want your business associates to
know or see what you did at yesterday’s outdoor BBQ or that
all night anniversary party that ended when the sun came up.

Now with Google+ and the “Circles” feature you can keep or
separate your different types of contacts into different
groups. You can share the real private stuff only with
those close friends and family – as it should be.

This will be a major selling point for Google+ and one
of its biggest drawing cards.

Sure Facebook will lose more than a few users but does
it really have to worry? I don’t think so… at least not
in the short term.

When I asked my sister about Google+, she said, “What
is Google+?”

Could be wrong but that may be a common answer with
many die-hard Facebook users. They simply don’t know
about Google+ and/or couldn’t care less.

My sister logs into Facebook each morning to check what’s
happening among her contacts… she and people like her won’t
be switching over to Google+ any time soon.

Computer geeks and marketing types… have probably already
switched over to Google+, but considering the world population
as a whole, these users will be a small minority.

More than a few social experts have said, it is Twitter who
really has to worry about Google+ and I agree. This new program
from Google has more of an appeal to me as a Twitter
user than a Facebook user.

In other words, my Facebook contacts can stay where they are,
and I have no intention of moving then over to Google+.
However, I can’t say the same thing about my Twitter contacts,
I want them in my Google+ account… if I am not alone in
that feeling, then Google+ could spell big trouble for Twitter.


First Impressions


First impressions, Google+ feels like an expanded version of
Twitter, designed for those who find 142 characters just too
limiting.

My Predictions for what they’re worth, the outlook for Google+
seems very promising… and not because it’s a Facebook replacement
or even a Twitter replacement. Google+ might just become
a vital key element of Google, if millions upon millions,
of its members use G+ as their starting point for “all things
Google” .

I have been saying for years that Google should connect
all their countless programs together in a “portal” or one
entry point.

This could be it.

If Google users use Google+ as their starting point
for “all things Google” then Google+ will be a roaring
success. Not just as a social networking site, but as
your own personal link to Google. I don’t believe any other
program like iGoogle, Google Profiles, Google Buzz… quite
filled that bill. Never really captured the hearts of users,
Google+ may just be the answer. It may just do the trick.

Regardless, for webmasters and especially for online marketers,
Google+ is a must have marketing tool. Combined with the Google+
button, it will play a major part in SEO and/or your Google rankings
in the years to come.

Another Possible SEO Development

WebProNews is making the argument that Google may be
re-designing its results pages or how they list their
search results. Google is testing a page layout where
the left table will move down as you scroll down…
at the moment it is static and remains at the top.

Many people believe Google is doing this so that
search results in the future will all be listed on
one page… like we now have in Google Image Search.

If Google does make this change – it will mean that
2nd and 3rd page results will be immediately visible
as you scroll down. Could make a big difference in
how much traffic you get because most Google users don’t
click beyond the first page.

I find using Google Image search really great just because
you don’t have to click to another page, like you have
to do in say – Yahoo Image Search.

As I have already told you before, Google is already using
“Authorship Markup”… you can tag your content/listing
with your author’s page and photo. If Google search results
are all listed on one page, having your photo next to your
listing will definitely make it more visible and you will
get more clicks or traffic than links which don’t have it.

Can Google+ Stop Facebook From Becoming The #1 Site On The Web?

All the talk this week has been about Google+ and can it beat
Facebook at the social networking game? If you just examine the
Alexa numbers alone… you will see that Facebook is beating Google
hands-down in some very important traffic stats.

Actually, in both May and June, Facebook knocked Google out of the
number one position a couple of times, you can see this if you
compare the stats for Google and Facebook in Alexa. But where Facebook
must have Google really concerned is in the number of “Pageviews”
and “Time Spent on Site” – Facebook easily wins the day.

Google had to do something to compete with Facebook, otherwise
Google would have to give up its position as the #1 site on the web.
Perception is everything on the web and Google would lose both
revenues and reputation, if it has to settle for second place.


Will Google+ become popular?


Google+ might catch on or it might not, anyone remember Google Buzz,
Google Wave, or even iGoogle – those haven’t exactly been knockouts
with 3/4 of a billion users?

The whole “Trust” angle could be a major factor in the success
of Google+… I believe Google has built up a lot of trust with
web surfers, this could bring onboard a lot of users.

But even with some good press and some good reviews, especially
when it comes to the “Circle” feature of grouping friends, doesn’t
mean hundreds of millions will be leaving Facebook for Google+.

Once you have all your networks built up in Facebook, many
people are not going to jump ship just because another program
comes along, even if it’s from Google. Then again, we always
have to remember, the Internet is very “fluid” and changes
quickly.


MySpace was once the most popular Facebook!


But many web users will always think of Google as a Search Engine
and leave it at that; they will keep their social connections
separate.

However, Google+ only has to cut into Facebook’s numbers, to
knock Facebook back down a couple of pegs. And/or to stop Facebook
from getting to a Billion Users, which will have its own bragging
rights.

Of course, I look at all this stuff from an SEO viewpoint, Google+
will give Google another powerful way to rank web content. It will
be another large pool of data Google can draw upon to discover
what content, sites, videos, articles… users are sharing and
recommending.


I believe a major SEO shift is happening in the background…


Instead of just backlinks, Google is now looking more closely at
your whole site and content, ranking it accordingly. Google MAY
also be getting ready to switch more of their ranking signals
towards their OWN data coming from 160+ million Google Chrome users,
the new Google +1 Button and the even newer Google+ social networking
platform we are talking about here.

Plus, Google also has all that data from Youtube, Google Analytics,
Adsense and Adwords… and of course, all that countless data from
it’s own search engine and how people use it.

In addition, we have big major changes on the horizon with ICANN’s new
“generic” or “dot anything” domains coming next year. This could
really switch up the whole Seo/Ranking game.

But remember, Google is always in control… just recently they
de-indexed ALL “co.cc” domains for too many spamny links and for
violating Google rules. All the sub-domains gone – vanished from
Google in one instant. If any of these new “generic” domains
goes down the same spammy road, Google can just de-list the
domain. Scary to say the least…

This also shows, regardless of how the Facebook vs Google+
plays out, Google is still in the driver’s seat and wheels
enormous power on the web. If I were Facebook, I would be
adding new features like video chat… and keeping a close
eye on what Google is doing with Google Plus.
