Google Penguin 1.1 Has Just Arrived!

It has just been a little over a month since Google
Penguin dramatically altered search results and shocked
countless webmasters and site owners. This version
of an online earthquake came on April 24, 2012.
But it seems like Penguin has now just gotten an update
or refresh.

Matt Cutts has tweeted:

Minor weather report: We pushed 1st Penguin algo
data refresh an hour ago. Affects <0.1% of English searches. — Matt Cutts (@mattcutts) May 26, 2012

Some are saying this is a “refresh” and not a real
update, but Danny Sullivan of Searchengineland
doesn’t agree:

“A data refresh means an algorithm update, likely
a minor one given the percentage of sites impacted,
but an algo update still.”

The full impact of this latest refresh is not
known – but it does cover a small percentage of
searches. It is also curious that Google would roll
this out on a long weekend – maybe they would expect
less of a discussion or outcry.

All the negative comments about the original Penguin
Update must be affecting how people view Google and their
results. Maybe not, because Google has stated it is
quite pleased with the Penguin results.

Google’s main advice to webmasters, if you do all the
changes to your site/links and still see no results
with each refresh – you might want to think about starting
over with a new site.

Sites with aggressive link building and heavy on-site
optimization – might have such a strong and complicated
link profile – it may not be feasible or worth your
time to fix all the issues. Starting over may be the best
option – especially if most of your former traffic came
from Google.

However, past experiences have shown, it’s best to wait
out Google algorithm changes… these always takes many
refreshes to get right.

Best advice – hold in there for now and keep checking
your link profile for any obvious practices that can
be easily fixed. Versify your anchor text links and try
to get new quality links from a variety of sources.
