Overall Assessment/Reviews
...Very Good to Raving!
Alienware has decided to go with their Aurora line for
its dual core notebooks. It sports 64-bit AMD desktop
processors for true desktop performance in a gaming
laptop. The results will no doubt please avid gamers
as well as those creative professionals waiting a high
performance video/web authoring powerhouse.
You can config your own Aurora with Next-generation Nvidia
Graphics such as the GeForce™ Go 7800 GTX and Dual SATA
Hard Drives with RAID, 200GB (100GB x 2) 7200 RPM
with HyperTransport. Helped along with up to 2GB Dual
Channel DDR SO-DIMM at 400MHz - 2 x 1024MB.
All this performance can be displayed on an impressive
and sharp 17" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD Clearview Screen
for cinema-quality gaming realism. It also has comes
with Built-in Camera.
The Alienware Aurora m7700 can easily handle the demands
of present day 32-bit games while processing the capabilities
for future 64-bit games. One extra that may be helpful to
purchase - Alienware® Respawn Recovery Kit which will restore
your Alienware to its original state when it left the factory -
This truly is simply a desktop computer in a fancy small
package. It is a mobile desktop computer - MDC for short!
A Desktop replacement with real processing muscle. It can
do almost anything a desktop PC can do and look better doing
it. One has to wonder with the introduction of Dual Core
Notebooks is the old desktop PC dead? It is drawing its
last breath as notebooks become more powerful and more
inexpensive. RIP.
We saw the first introduction of dual core notebooks last
summer with the Rockdirect Xtreme 64. Don't expect much
battery life from these gaming monsters but these dual
core notebooks are indeed a good replacement for the old
desktop. They are portable but just barely so - these were
meant to be more of a mobile desktop - than a ultra portable
thin and light laptop. Still much easier to take a LAN
party than a bulky desktop!
Just what kind of performance are we talking about? Here's
what one person did to test his Aurora m7700:
He had the following applications open or running
simultaneously:
"Windows Explorer
Remote Desktop MMC Console (remoted in to my server at work)
Add/Remove Programs
Filezilla FTP
Windows Media Player playing a home video
Free Agent Usenet Newsreader downloading new posts
Adobe Photoshop CS2 with 150 640x480 images open at the
same time (I also opened all of them as a single batch,
not one by one)
Opera 8.1 browser with 8 tabbed windows open
Macromedia Dreamweaver 8
MS Outlook
Mailwasher Pro 5.0
MS Word
MS Excel
MS Powerpoint
PerfectDisk Defragmenter (two instances defragging both of my partitions)
PowerDVD running a different video than the one Windows Media player was running
America's Army video game
Internet Explorer
Poker Tracker database of over 800,000 hands served from
a Postgres 8.0 back end database (hosted locally)
Cold Fusion Server 7
IIS 6.0 w/5 websites running (hosted locally)
Task manager
Si Meter
RivaTuner 2.0
Norton Anti-Virus
Zone Alarm
Mobilemeter"
The Aurora didn't miss a beat...you can read more about
this in the Notebook Forum here:

Also be aware all that power and function comes with a
hefty price tag but you probably already know that.
However, for those who want the best in a gaming notebook
and price is not a consideration - the Aurora m7700 is a
good choice for the ultimate gaming machine.
Battery Life: 60 minutes
Size: 15.6" x 11.7" x 2.1" @ 8.6 lbs
Cons: Short battery life
Pros: Top of the line gaming 'mobile desktop', stylish design and presentation, powerful performance.
Conclusion: The Aurora m7700 has all the power of a good Gaming Machine. Will this be the ultimate 'Gamer'? --
- maybe, until something else comes along!
