As we head into summer, I always find I don't
spend as much time on my sites as I should! But
this summer I plan to devote my time to studying
more about RSS and SEO Rankings - how it effects your
rankings for the different search engines.

I believe there are definite advantages and I will, of course,
keep you informed on my findings... keep reading...

o RSS Strategic Positioning

A while back I wrote an article on 'Chasing the Spider'.
- How Strategic RSS Positioning can Give Your Site the Edge'
- don't know if anyone has done any extensive research on the
SEO advantages of RSS positioning (I am not a techie or SEO
expert so extensive data analysis is a little out of my league).
However, I have noticed some marked improvements in my keyword
rankings from using Blogs/RSS.

So much so, that now basically whenever I want to target a
major keyword or subject area - I set up a separate blogs/feeds
for that topic. Over a couple of months this will bring up your
rankings in many of the search engines. Mainly resulting from
the numerous links you have linking back to your site. This
is not blog/rss spamming - you offer valuable information
in your blog then link this keyword rich content to your site.

And one of the easiest ways to do this is take a task you would
normally be doing and put it into a blog. This newsletter is a
perfect example - instead of just mailing it out to subscribers
I place it in this blog.

Company updates is another great source of blog material. So too
is a company 'getting to know you' blog - where everyone
contributes something to the blog - hey even Google is doing this.
Google's Blog.

Simple and easy way to 'flesh out' your site. Use the free
blogging sites or put blogs/rss on your own domains - most
professional marketers have hundreds of domains. (See below for
free rss scripts for your sites.)

Most notable improvements have come in my Yahoo rankings - hate
giving examples of rankings because they can change overnight and
you end up with egg on your face. But some phrases I am targeting
are 'how to build a web site' 'how to fix pc' 'notebook computer
buyers guide' (now these are not really popular keywords but they
do bring in some highly targeted traffic). You can check these
keywords in Yahoo and see if my site comes up.

Also note, any targeted keywords or phrases should have paid
sponsor ads on that page - it gives an indication that people
are converting those keywords into sales otherwise they wouldn't
be wasting their adverting bucks on useless keywords!

In Msn my keywords are rising but not as fast as Yahoo!

For Google, there is less call for cheers but I have noticed
(alongwith everyone else) that using blogs is one of the best
and fastest ways to get your keywords indexed by Google. I use
eBlogger which is owned by Google (not that its makes a difference
- it just the one I started with and although an independent
blog looks more professional - I have gotten used to eBlogger
and like it - besides I can host the whole blog/feed on my
own site).

Now, what I am really noticing is that my blogs act as a
traffic funneling system that funnels targeted visitors to
my main sites and keywords. That is, even in Google, if
you're not highly ranked for a keyword or phrase -so what-
you can draw traffic from related keywords that than click
your links to your very competitive keywords!

Blogs and feeds extend the reach of your site - pulling
targeted visitors to your keywords. Articles do much the same job!

It is a neat way of getting around the overly misused and
abused Google PR ranking system, many sites for really
competitive keywords can buy links on high ranked sites to
get top position for these keywords. Competing with sites
of PR7 or PR8 is a daunting task but even with a PR3 or
PR4 site using blogs/rss (or articles) is just another
smart way of skinning the cat - funnel traffic thru your
blogs and undercut your higher ranked competition.

You won't get as much traffic as these PR7 or PR8 sites
but you will get traffic - it does work - just try it!

Anyone who has had their blogs/rss feeds up for awhile
- know what I am talking about. I am just noticing this
trend as my blogs/feeds entries become more numerous
and better indexed by the search engines.

It's a major tactic or marketing technique that can result
in more targeted visitors to your sites - which means more
subscribers, customers and/or sales for your site. It's
also a major reason why anyone with a web site must have
a blog/rss feed if they want their site to remain truly
competitive in a very competitive field.

This is a great source of traffic that you're leaving on
the table if you don't have blogs/rss feeds set up for
your site or keywords.

Get those Blogs and RSS Feeds up and running before
the day is out!

If you need help - just download my free blog/rss guide
that quickly shows you how to set up a free blog/rss on
your site.
RSS Guide

And speaking of getting your rankings up - one of the
best SEO experts I have encountered on the web is
Brad Callen. His SEO Elite is a product you should have
if you can afford it - in any case just taking his free email
seo course will do wonders for your keywords and site.

o You must have a Firewall

As related to last week's article on Spyware, here's another
one on Firewalls. Basically, a firewall is a filtering security
system that you set up on your computer or network - anything
going in or out must abide by your rules or security measures.

Hope you have a great week!

o Greetings from The Blog Zone

Like many of the subscribers and readers of this
newsletter I keep or write several blogs to compliment
my websites. It really has extended the reach of my
sites and I am now getting a lot of traffic from
the search engines to my blog postings and archive pages.

Blogs are a great way of building content and links to
your main site - its an addition (in my humble opinion) you
must now have if you want your site to remain competitive.

For getting your site spidered and indexed - it can't be
beat. If you're targeting certain 'keywords or phrases' -
place them in your blogs and you will see a quick indexing
of your keywords.

Even using free sites like Blogger.com or Bloglines.com will
give your site greater exposure and reach. All it takes is
a little time and you can have a blog up and running within
minutes. There is no reason why you shouldn't be blogging
your heart out!

Just go blog!

o Google's Portal!

Google has finally come out with a portal
site or page. If they wanted to remain competitive,
it was a 'must have' development or next step
and it marks the 'coming of age' for this search engine.
(Again, my humble opinion!)

You can now personalize your Google and make it your
own. Listing for gmail, news, weather, stocks and so on.
It brings Google up to speed with other SEs portals like
mymsn and myYahoo.

You can check out Google's lastest offering here:
www.google.com/ig

Why Google has decided to not use an RSS feature defies
comprehension! Someone high up in Google must be sitting on
their 'anti-rss' behind - it really doesn't make sense.

One of the most popular uses of my.yahoo is the rss
feature - keeping up to date on your favorite blogs
and subjects of interest. By definition, this is one
of the major reasons for a start or portal page. First
thing you check in the morning - to get informed on the
latest news on your areas of interest. DUH!

Of course, this is only a 'beta' version of Google's portal
page - lets hope the final version will have an RSS feature.
There should be a 'lobby' group petitioning Google to finally
grab the RSS 'wildcard' and put it into play! Enough already!

Not having RSS is like building a house without plumbing -
you have to go outside to do your business!

Not what an ideal portal should be...

o Pinging Your Blogs

Regularly pinging your blogs does wonders for getting your
sites spidered and indexed! Most of you have probably
noticed by now that using sites like 'myYahoo' to ping
your blogs and rss feeds is a great way of keeping your
sites and webpages in the indexes of the major search engines.

Pinging is simply sending out a signal to all the weblog tracking
sites that your site/blog has been updated.

Here's a site http://pingomatic.com/ that will 'ping' you blog automatically in many different sites.
Services or sites you can Ping with one click:

o Top 5 Spyware Fighting Tips

As I mentioned last week I am writing some articles on the
threat of spyware and adware on your computer. This is becoming
a real pest and may already have replaced spam as the number
one headache for surfers and computer users.

However, spyware, adware, worms, malware, trojans, etc. may present
a greater threat than spam. Spyware agents can literally ruin your
life - if you become a victim of identity theft. You may also suddenly
lose everything on your computer - a total wipe-out of all data and
programs.

It happens!

No doubt, combating these spyware agents will become a major trend
or activity in the coming months and years. Here's 5 simple steps
you can take to make sure you win this battle.

You can read the article here:Spyware Removal Tips

o Google's Playing Dodgeball!

o Google's Blog

o The Spyware Threat

******************

o Building Your Blog Links

Building links to your blog should be just
as important to you as building links to
your website. First thing you should do is get
your blog listed in all the major online
blog directories.

This will build traffic to your blog and
make your blog better known on the web.

One of the best places for this is
Masternewmedia Top55
Actually, there are over 100 listings now and
it takes a bit of time to go thru all of them
but just put aside a few hours in the day and
just submit your blogs.

Speaking of building links...

o Google's Playing Dodgeball!

Chess has always been a favorite game of mine,
I am not much good, never was and never will be -
but the strategy amuses me. Figuring out
your opponent's moves, their thinking and game
plan is what makes chess fun to play.

Trying to figure out Google is much like playing
chess. First it was just a search engine with an
algorithm to die for - now it's starting to play a
whole new ball game - with strange moves into
some unknown territory.

Indexing and cataloging all the works in all the
world's great libraries - was understandable
and reasonable. Who Else?

But buying seems to be a real puzzle - are
they moving on to collecting and dispensing personal
information now - (for a good time call...!) or are they just
snapping up any fresh talent that raises its ugly head in
the 'dot com' world.

It's more than likely the latter, and it's probably not
a bad strategy, more than any other medium in history,
the web rewards 'creative brains' that come up with
new and innovative ways to use it. Google can now afford
to snap up any new 'brain talent' that comes along - rapidly
becoming the 'new Medici' of the wired world.

Which might not be a bad thing, putting Google's enormous
resources behind such creative brains could produce
some interesting new inventions!

o Google's Blog

Those who are interested in finding out more about
Google - should check out Google's Blog. It gives you an insight
into some of the things they're working on.

Their Blog has a PR9 - wonder how they got that!

o The Spyware Threat

Despite an encore round of the flu - all this week I
have been checking out the spyware threat. Is it real?
Should you be concerned? What you can do to protect yourself?

I have been reading and analyzing a great report by
Webroot on the 'State of Spyware' - you can
get a free copy here. You will need Adobe 5 or higher - to be able
to read it. State of Spyware

I will be writing 5 or 6 articles on this topic
in the next couple of weeks and although it doesn't
have much to do with RSS - I will be reporting about
it here - so stay tooned!

Besides, if you surf the web and own a computer you should
be afraid, very afraid - but more on this next week.

Hope you have a great week!

o Will RSS Ever Reach Primetime?

******************

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mothers out
there and to the people who are glad they
have one!

Media RSS, Safari RSS and Laura Bush!
or Will RSS Ever Reach Prime Time?

Recent developments have again, brought RSS to the forefront
but will RSS ever reach Prime Time? Will it finally go mainstream?

For those who are keeping a close eye on recent RSS/Blogging
developments, interest is building again. Some new developments
worth noting would include - Yahoo's new Media RSS and
Safari RSS which is packaged in the new Mac OS X.

o MediaRSS

Yahoo's Media RSS is a new RSS module that will make it easy to handle,
move and syndicate multimedia files or content across the web.
We already have enclosures for audio files (Podcasting) and
images but Yahoo's Media RSS will accommodate TV, video
clips, movies, etc.

This new RSS feature will be integrated into Yahoo Video
Search Engine - making it easy to find and access all your
favorite video files and clips. It will no doubt bring RSS
closer to Primetime - no pun intended!
Media RSS .

o Safari RSS

Another recent development is the introduction of Safari RSS
in the New Mac OS X.

Basically, the new MAC operating system gives us an easy-to-use
navigational bar that lets you browse, manage, search and view all
your RSS Feeds. It convenient, easy and puts all that great RSS
content at your fingertips. Keeping up on all your favorite
subjects doesn't get any easier than this!

Learn more about Safari RSS here:
.

There is one other recent event that should be noted: Laura
Bush's stand out performance at the press corps’ dinner
on May 5. This performance was covered and reported by some
bloggers in their blogs.

It points out one direction RSS/Blogs could go in order for it
to enter Primetime. RSS desperately needs a mainstream audience.
In order for it to really become a major communication factor
- it must reach and be used by the ordinary 'jane/joe' on the street.

Elitism is fine, but it won't build you a world where everyone is using
RSS/Blogs! Some Polls have put the usage of RSS/Blogs at 20% of the
surfing web.

And speaking of elitism - one can't help but ask - where the heck
is Google in all of this?

It boggles the mind to think that Google after having bought
Blogger.com -- is not giving RSS some serious consideration.

Nature of the beast, RSS/Blogs contain some of the most
current, relevant information that's on the web. Why isn't
Goggle using it? How hard can it be to list rss feeds in
their current search results even just as an add-on?
How hard would it be to put an RSS feed search button on their
main page? They give pfd files in some of their results - how
much would it take to index and give relevant rss content or feeds.

Is it a conscious decision NOT to use RSS? Why? It can't
be the silly old issue of which format to use, rss or atom?
People working with Google are using the same internet,
and at last count, they're still living on the same
planet -- so why isn't Google using RSS?

You don't get to where Google has gotten by being dumb!
Is there more going on that the public is not aware off?
What's going on behind the scenes?

And the major question -- Is Google using RSS secretly
in their algorithm?

Everyone knows the kind of deal making/fuss made over their PR
rating system. Maybe they are using RSS in their algorithm
and have wisely keep it quiet this time? Maybe rss/blogs
are playing a bigger role in Google than most people realize?

Pure speculation or is it? Many marketers have noticed you
can 'gatecrash' or 'backdoor' your way into Google by using
an RSS feed or blog like Blogger.com and pinging your
posts.

I have personally put keywords into Google index in less
than 48 hours using this method. Just using blogger.com where
I host the feed and blog on my own site. Using a site like
Bloglines or My.yahoo to ping or call up your rss feed - does
produce a quick response in Google. Every rss post seems to
have a 'googlebot' permanently stuck to its rear end!

But a more visible form of RSS Search is needed in Google unless
they want to keep losing ground.

RSS/Blogs are not just a trend and they are not going to go away,
in fact all recent developments indicates its gearing up to really
enter Prime Time (the use of rss video, podcasting, mediaRSS,
Safari RSS, Even CNN does a Blog Report!...)

Will the final acceptance come if the next Windows arrives with a
built in RSS feature similar to the one offered by Mac OS?

If you don't deliver the goods, folks will just go elsewhere to
find what they want. The marketplace will take care of you and put
you in your place.

The smart people at Google and Microsoft must realize they have to
deal with RSS or lose ground in a very competitive world. They must
know they have to take steps to accommodate this new way of passing
'content' around the web or suffer the consequences. They must know
they have to provide this extra convenience for their patrons...

Or RSS will deal with them.

......

Hope you have a great week!

o 10 Quick Ways To Kick-Start Your Keywords

******************

o The Flu!

Have a bad case of the flu so this newsletter will
be as quick as possible. There is a few things I
wanted to tell you about especially on last week's
topic of making or placing 'profit pages' on your
websites. Or even constructing a mini site on one
of these profitable keywords or topics.

Target a high paying keyword or phrase and design a
webpage around it on your site. Tie in some highly
respected affiliate products (thru clickbank, cj or
some other affiliate programs) and place these affiliate
links on your 'money page'.

Now I just got an email from Neil Shearing (I am a
subscriber of his, of course!) telling me about a
product by Len Thurmond called *Article Automator*

Flu or no flu, I had to check this one out, basically ...
it's solving the problem we are talking about here - how
to find and build content rich pages the search engines love...

This software automates this whole process...
you type in your keyword and the Article
Automator finds appropriate articles, downloads
them and formats the articles into webpages you
can use on your site. You have fresh content
for your targeted 'profitable keywords'.

So check out this great software Article Automator.

**********************************************************
o 10 Quick Ways To Kick-Start Your Profit Pulling Keywords
**********************************************************

First, you must realize that targeting the right keywords
or phrases is the 'key' to making any kind of profit from
your site. Choosing the 'right' keywords (the exact keyword
or phrase surfers type into the search engines to find your
site or product) can make or break your online venture.

How do you find these profitable keywords?

One simple way to do this is to just type your 'keyword' into
the different search engines - then take note of the number of
paid adverts listed for your keyword. If there are no paid
adverts -- chances are high that your keyword is not a paying
keyword.

Perhaps, a more exact way is to use Wordtracker or Overture.com,
they will give you the numbers of searches made last month for that
keyword, along with a whole list of variations on that keyword
or phrase. Overture will also give you a list of who's bidding on
the keyword and how much they're willing to pay for traffic to
that keyword.

Getting a high ranking (at least on the first or second page)
for a paying 'keyword' in one of the top search engines like
Google, Msn, or Yahoo can set up a nice revenue stream
on your site. It can mean a lot to your site's bottom line.

So try these 10 quick ways to 'kick-start' your keywords:

1. PPC - Pay per click, this is the ultimate kick-start method but
you must know what you're doing! Paying for traffic or hits to your
targeted keywords is probably the best and fastest way to kick-start
your keywords. Use Google adwords or programs like overture.com to bid
on clicks to your keywords or keyword phrases.

In PayPerClick marketing, many marketers target 'every' keyword
for the product they are selling, including misspelled words
and phrases. They may then narrow down their list to only the
'keywords' with a high conversion rate, how many hits
it takes to get a sale. One sale in 10 clicks and you could be on
easy street. One sale in 1000 clicks and you're probably on your way
to the poorer side of town!

In other words, you could lose a ton of money if you're not careful
or prudent. Do some serious research before you jump into this arena.
Recommended reading would probably start with
Google Cash by Chris Carpenter.

2. Anchor text it to death! Especially if you're targeting Google
traffic, you must have your keyword or phrase placed in a many on-site
and off-site 'anchor text links' that you can possibly get.

Anchor text in an url link is as follows:
<*a href="http://www.yoursite.com">This is your anchor text!

Off-page factors are very important to Google which ranks sites from
PR0 to PR10; the number of 'anchor text' links with your particular
keyword coming from high PR sites is extremely important --
the more high PR links you have, the higher the ranking for your
keyword or site will be.

Some savvy marketers have found that it might be more cost effective to
buy 'keyword links' on high PR Sites for your targeted keywords rather
than shelling out money over and over again for the PPC campaigns. One time
or yearly purchase of certain high profit pulling keyword links
that place your site or selling page at #1 on SERPs (search engine
results pages). A #1 spot on Google for a high paying keyword that can keep
paying for years is worth its weight in gold. Notice the large
number of 'moans and groans' whenever a major shift in Google's
rankings occurs i.e. as in the Florida update.

If you're targeting Yahoo, make sure you repeat your keyword often,
and at the top of your web copy page. Place it in your 'alt text' in
your website's images. But be careful, don't keyword spam by repeating it
hundreds of times on your web page.

3. Plug it into your existing site. Professional marketers, plug in
their keywords into their existing sites by placing links on all or
numerous pages on their sites. Some use a resource table at the bottom of each
page, then when a new resource (keyword) comes along, they just update and plug in
this new link. Do a little homework, and check out how some major SEO sites
have this column of resources (keywords) listed on all their pages -- thus,
providing a large number of internal links to their keywords -- directing
or tunneling PR towards their most profitable keywords.

4. Place your anchor text link in your blogs. If you're a prudent
marketer you will have already turned some of your site's normal
offerings into blogs and rss feeds. Example, if you have an existing ezine or
newsletter, place an online version into a blog. If you regularly do company
updates, news releases - place these into a blog and rss feed.

5. Likewise, you can start a series of blogs on your keyword or subject
matter. It has meant an overall increase in traffic and rankings to my sites
and perhaps more importantly the 'spider activity' has gone from almost nil to a
daily infestation. Regularly 'ping' your posts by using sites like
my.yahoo.com - this will get your keywords spidered and indexed more quickly.

6. Place your anchor text links on marketing forums or on forums related
to your keyword's subject. Forums are a great way to kick-start any
keywords that you are targeting. The traffic is great and most
of these forums are spidered daily.

7. Place your anchor text keywords on a high profile site. If you can
get your keyword links on some 'major players', sites which have over
a million links or more, do it! I have noticed my site is spidered
more frequently and by different robots after getting my links on sites like
buzzle.com and addme.com - it probably won't hurt your Google PR ranking either!

8. Place your anchor text keywords on high profile blogs. Again, don't
keyword spam but try and build strategic relationships with top bloggers
in your 'keyword' subject area. Then the mutual exchanging of links will
fall into the natural scheme of things.

9. Write articles around your keyword topic, and submit them to ezine
directories like ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com. Many marketers
suggest you NOT use your keyword in the Title or Body of your article!
Place it instead in the anchor text link in your resource box.
Reasoning behind this, your article may be picked up by some major sites with
High PR rankings or ratings -- if you have the same article on your site -- you
will lose traffic to these major competitors. So you have to be a bit sneaky
and carefully funnel traffic to your keyword from the search engines.

10. Start a viral 'keyword product'. Many professional marketers also
place their keywords into a 'viral' product of some kind: a free
brandable ebook, free reports, mini-courses, or tutorials that can be
used and passed around freely.

So next time, don't just place a keyword on your site and wait for
something to happen, instead, take a more pro-active role by trying
these 10 methods of kick-starting your keywords and you will immediately
see results. They do work and the proof is just waiting your next move...
