========================
o Happy Easter!
========================

Happy Easter to those celebrating this
holiday. I am celebrating Easter so will
keep this Newsletter really, really short -
promise!

Spring has sprung in my small part of the
world and it's hard to stay glued to the
computer indoors. Only thing keeps me going,
is the constant stream of surprises coming
from RSS and Blogging.

========================
o Yahoo360 - Now What?
========================

Yahoo has something in beta that looks very
interesting - Yahoo360. It will, no doubt,
bring blogging and RSS more into the mainstream.
Open it up to more people and get the ball
rolling even further.

Look what Hotmail or Gmail did for e-mail,
you need programs that catch people's interest
and get them involved.

You can check out Yahoo360 and sign-up to get
notified when it comes online. Looks like a
neat package.

You can create your own blog, send text/photos
from your phone to your blog. Photos albums, blast
out quick communications, a LUNCHcast station -
listen to your Yahoo Music Station, etc.

Check it out here:Yahoo360

===============================
o Google and RSS/Blogs - Anybody Home?
===============================

What's up with Google?

Have they dropped the ball with RSS? What
are we not seeing? Something is not right
with this picture?

Surely, it's too early to have gone soft from
all that ISO influx!

Lot of speculation on what or how Google will
use RSS/Blogging. Chris Richardson of Webproworld
had these:comments.

Their interest in Blogger, Feedburner and Firefox must
be leading to something. Why is there not an RSS
search/product on their home page. An RSS article
search feed directory, an RSS special subject/topic
search feed directory -- something, anything.

Will Google finally paint its RSS picture in the
coming months...they sure know how to paint that
logo, but it's time to put some substance behind
all that window dressing.

Better stop now, before I get myself into trouble...
I love Google. But the honeymoon is over folks,
what have you done for us lately...

Hope you have a great week or holidays!

o All About Audio
========================

First Day of spring is always a good
time to start something new. Audio on
websites have been around for awhile but
the use of sound with RSS is just picking
up some steam. So...

This newsletter is all about Audio!

Sound or audio can be a very effective
way to get your message across. Marketers
are really jumping for the headphones and
mikes - to sell you their messages or products.

Using audio with RSS or Blogs is called 'podcasting'
-- taken from the two words: ipod & broadcasting.
See the article below to read all about this
new technology for RSS and Blogging. It will
further blow the lid off RSS in 2005, and it's just
one more reason why you should be using RSS.

Audio or podcasts can be made of anything - from your
favorite song to your killer sales pitch. It holds
a lot of promise for audio guides and tutorials on
your chosen topics.

You should take advantage of audio in your
own marketing. If you're like me - have a heavy
accent that will totally confuse any listener this
side of the Atlantic - you can always use other people's
recordings or hire someone to do the speaking for
you.

Here's one of the best links from Tinu on

Podcasting Primer for Bloggers!
===============================

Listen Up - Podcasting Primer for Bloggers

Podcasting is a new audio technology that can be
attached to RSS for easy delivery of audio files.
Bloggers or publishers can publish these 'audio'
or 'radio' files which subscribers can automatically
download and enjoy.

The Free encyclopedia Wikipedia, defines "Podcasting"
as "making audio files (most commonly in MP3 format)
available online in a way that allows software to
automatically detect the availability of new files
(generally via RSS), and download the files for
listening at the user's convenience."

Dave Winer, the RSS Pioneer and Innovator states
"...Podcasting works the same way (as RSS Feeds),
with one exception. Instead of reading the new
content on a computer screen, you listen to the
new content on any capable mp3 player on the computer
or hardware player such as the iPod. Think of your
player with Podcasting as having a set of subscriptions
that are checked regularly for updates."

Podcasting comes from the two words - iPod and broadcasting.

Put simply, Podcasting is basically adding audio files
to your RSS Feed or Blog. It also turns your RSS Feed
into a radio broadcast, the only difference between
it and regular radio is distribution. Regular radio
'pushes' the signal out; in Podcasting - the listener
initiates or 'pulls' the cast with their subscription
and automatically downloads the audio file or radio program.

Making a Podcast is also relatively simple.

First, you have to record your audio file, you can
use any platform or application to make your recording.
One good choice would be Audacity, http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
because it's free, cross-platform and you can mix together
multiple audio files with it. If you're using the Mac -
GarageBand may work for you - it's also free. http://www.apple.com/ilife/

Make your audio file and convert it to MP3 format i.e. save
it with a .mp3 file extension. Upload it to your web server.

Next, create your Podcast RSS newsfeed - just
describe your Podcast in your RSS file and place
a link in this file to your MP3 file.

Each 'item' contains an 'enclosure' tag as in this
example of a Podcast of a Grateful Dead song.

<*enclosure url="http://www.scripting.com/mp3s/theOtherOne.mp3" length="6666097" type="audio/mpeg" /*> Remove asterisks in live code.

You can also post and advertise your Podcasts on your website
by using the familiar orange xml with a speaker logo added.

Your subscribers can download and listen to your Podcasts
on their computer or thru their iPods. It should also be
noted UndergroundMedia has released Podcasting search
plugins for the increasingly popular and RSS friendly
Firefox browser.

For further interest and research you might want to try
some of these handy links:

- Yahoo mailing list for Podcasters:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/podcasters

- The official iPodder website: http://www.ipodder.org/

- Podcast Alley, a large Podcast directory:http://www.podcastalley.com

- Podcasting News, Podcasting news site: http://www.podcastingnews.com

- Podcast.net, very comprehensive searchable list of Podcasts: http://www.podcast.net/

- Check out Dave Winer and Adam Curry; founders/facilitators of Podcasting http://radio.weblogs.com/

For Bloggers and RSS users, Podcasting adds an exciting new
way to connect with their subscribers and audience. Since it
combines the MP3 format and iPods; Podcasting will no doubt,
add an explosive element to your blogs and RSS Feeds. Early
innovators or users of Podcasts can extend the reach and scope
of their blogs and/or RSS feeds by pulling in more subscribers
and listeners.

Don't let this new innovation pass you by - give your Blog or
Site the competitive edge of sound. Start Podcasting...

o Mikey Goes to College
========================

Just a Mouse Click Away

When I first got access to the internet
I could hardly believe my eyes... all
this subject matter...ready to be devoured.

Studied, dissected, digested and absorbed - so
much information. And all there for the
taking.

The delouse of information and sites were extremely
overwhelming at first, until I got a handle on the
different sections.

Coming from a slight art background, I emerged
myself headfirst into the muck.

Artists are trained to observe, record, digest and
regurgitate their findings into a new creation - maybe
that's a little too graphic - but you get the picture.

From the start, what interested me most, were the
communities that were instantly formed - drawing
members from all corners of the globe. These communities
formed around a certain topic, or subject of interest.

The village square was replaced by messages boards, forums
and chat rooms.

One of the first communities I examined in some
detail was a free online gaming site - members chatted
as they played different games: slots, bingo, cards, etc.
Of course, it was the people that made it interesting,
different perspectives from all corners of the world.

The wealth of knowledge gotten from studying this
community is sometimes underestimated by many. Most
dismiss it as a bit of harmless fun on the internet.

However, thru the right eyes - it can be so much more than
just a bit of fun. So much more.

The group dynamics, the social interaction, and
even the political viewpoints - all make interesting
material to be examined.

One of the most interesting groups that I am presently
studying, interacting with and also having a bit
of fun! Is the online marketing community connected
with Instant Buzz.

This site and community was started by a twenty year old
kid named Mike Chen and Mark Joyner. It offers free
advertising for your web sites or the products you're
marketing. It mainly works by members exchanging
text ads thru the Internet Explorer toolbar while they
surf. It's automatic and surprisingly very effective.

Actually, Mike Chen is going to college in the fall and
has recently sold the Instant Buzz to a different
marketer - Mike Filsnaine. The jury is still out on
how this will affect the community - sometimes when
a new owner takes over - it's game over. But we
have to wait and see.

Instant Buzz has a very active forum community - it
very quickly moved up the alexa ratings and now stands at
787. Posts submitted to this forum always brings in
very good traffic - actually for me, traffic from the
forum has been more responsive and frequent than from
the toolbar ads.

But it's the interaction, communicating, and contact
building that's the most interesting. Achieving a sense
of community in the wired medium is not easy - it takes
a lot communication, give and take - but most of all, a
sense of belonging to the group or club dynamic.

And like any group or community you join - you end up getting
much more from it than what you give to the group.

It's no wonder, that some of the most effective marketing
groups working the net - belong to these community
club-like settings - a couple that readily come to mind are
the Warriors Forum, run by Allen Says and the Entrepreneurial
Success Forum run by Anthony Blake.

Or the new blogger's professional association that's just
forming around Paul Chaney. This one offers some great
opportunities - RSS and Blogging is just breaching the
mainstream.

As more and more companies start or hire bloggers as
legit marketing PR additions to their advertising budgets
- commercialization of RSS/Blogs is not a bad thing for it will
provide a more stable base for bloggers and also provide
another online community worthy of serious study.

Collectively, these groups can be a powerful resource
offering new ideas, innovations and a knowledge base that
can be easily drawn upon in time of need.

In my opinion, these communities make up some of the most
interesting fabric the internet has woven in its short history.
Others may disagree, but they would have to admit these
communities offer some of the best 'human' resources and
the best 'data' reference collections on the web.

Resources that no doubt, will be used and drawn upon by countless
internet users in the years to come. Our collective intelligence
neatly packaged and readily accessible to everyone.

Now do yourself a favor - Go Explore! Go back to college!
It's just a mouse click away.

===============================
o Podcasting and Broadcatching
===============================

Podcasting is ready to catch on with RSS
users and I will have an article on this subject
as well as Broadcatching next week.

Podcasting as defined by Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
("Podcasting" is making audio files (most commonly in MP3 format)
available online in a way that allows software to automatically
detect the availability of new files (generally via RSS), and
download the files for listening at the user's convenience.)

It joins together the two words Ipod and Broadcasting.
It's basically an audio magazine subscription, you download and listen
to these files on your own time. The popularity of Ipods could
make this a very popular way to get your message across.

Broadcatching, is somewhat more complicated but similar - you
receive a webcast or netcast thru RSS feeds. Real potential here
for the Billion Channel Internet. (Read Article Below)

Broadcatching is still in the forming stages with BitTorrent and RSS
combining to form a webcasting system - more like a TiVo system
for the web. (Big money in there somewhere for the one who sets
this baby up!!!)

==============================================
o 5 Deadly Ad Testing Mistakes by Mark Joyner
==============================================

This is a free PDF download (aff. link) from
Mark Joyner. Like him or hate him; in or out
of Internet Marketing - Mark Joyner is still the
'grand old master' flexing his muscles - he's
a major force behind Instant Buzz.

For those new to web marketing - Joyner was one
of its first major players, many of the marketing
techniques around today were pioneered by him.

A few years ago, he supposedly left the marketing
arena and he sold off all his 'source code' (stuff
that dreams are made of, baby) - Mike Chen was one
of the people who bought all this code. Producing
products/programs such as 'ScreenBlaze', 'Make Your
Own Software' and 'Instant Buzz'.

As mentioned above, Mike is going back to college and
has sold 'Instant Buzz'. He also has a major product
coming out around the 18th of March.

The link above is a pre-selling technique by Joyner and
Chen for this new product which will only be on the market
for two weeks. This pre-selling activity in my opinion, is
amounting to a 'marketing masterpiece or stroke'!

o Feature Article - RSS And The Billion Channel Internet!
==========================================================

The more I use, research, and study RSS - the more I believe
that a billion channel internet (each website a different channel)
is very close to becoming a reality. Podcasting, broadcatching,
webcasting...are all pointing the way to a slightly different web
than what we're used to. One that reaches out to us, more pro-
active, more assertive...

o The Future of RSS

RSS has been over-hyped so much lately, unless you're
actually using it and seeing it's effectiveness firsthand,
you will probably be turned off by all this overblown hype.

Don't be.

As a marketing tool, offering information on your website or
product - RSS is very valuable.

As an email (bypass) system - RSS is very valuable.

As a publishing tool, getting your information 'out there', on
other people's desktops and websites - RSS is very valuable.

And the list goes on...

Personally, the future of RSS is what interests me the most.

I have some background in the art field, people in that field
are always looking ahead.

RSS gives us our own publishing facility, it's more akin to
broadcasting than publishing. It broadcasts our ideas, our websites,
our products...

Basically, I believe, RSS is paving the way for a billion channel
internet where each website will be it's own interactive tv channel.
As storage space, transmission, download times, becomes irreverent or
instantaneous --- how can it not happen?

It's only early days for RSS yet - imagine what this system will be
like in 5, 50, or a 100 years?

Everything changes...

Imagine if your idea of an automobile got stuck at the Model T stage
--- ever wonder what a fright you'll get , if suddenly a Ferrari popped
around the turn!

Just something to think about as you read this week's feature article.
Please take it with a grain of salt!!!

o Do You Soapbox?

In former times, jumping up on a soapbox or any
platform in the street to speak your mind was
a popular pastime. Mainly reserved for political
radicals, the biblically inspired or the Cuckoo's
frequent flyer's club - the soapbox did fill a need.

The need to express oneself.

I have always thought of blogs and blogging as
more of a 'soapbox' than a 'journal' or a 'weblog'
of daily events. A modern day techno version of the
soapbox, with the transfer of one's firmly held
beliefs/opinions in a few kb's here and there along
the information highway.

The stronger the beliefs or opinions - the more
popular the blog. The more unique the content - the
more entertaining the blog is to read.

It also gives you a platform for entertaining
off-beat ideas and new ways of thinking. And it's
a very democratic platform - where anyone's input
can be just as valid as another.

Forget the vote, the blog is a much more democratic tool.

And it's very young. It has a long way to go. Ever wonder
what it will be like in a hundred years.

Nothing stays the same, everything changes, everything
evolves. Even our methods of thinking, our means of
expressing ourselves. Imagine a Model T, a Fifties Cadillac,
and a present day Ferrari in your mind. Now imagine your
vision or view of the automobile if you only had the
Model T to base it on? the Cadillac?

Ever wonder what blogs will be like in fifty or a
hundred years? What about websites? What about the
Internet? We're only at the Model T stage - ever wonder
what that Ferrari will look like?

Lately, I can't get that idea out of my head! What blogs,
the web, all this will be like in fifty years, a hundred
years, a thousand years? Driving me around the bend - waiting
for the last departure call for that Cuckoo flight!

Guess it's my artist's training coming back to haunt me!

A small amount of artist's training goes a long way. Artists
are trained to think 'in', 'outside', 'around', and 'ahead'
of the box. Especially ahead of the box - five shots ahead
of the cue ball - at all times.

For an artist, it's a pure matter of survival. They have
to be ahead of crowd just to be mildly interesting. The real
fortune tellers leap ahead of the pack. Forging the way.

Blogs and RSS are forging the way for new ideas, new ways
of expression...it's your own little wired soapbox...just
waiting for you to step up.

Blogs/RSS will evolve and change. No doubt, it will turn
that wired soapbox into your own personal interactive tv
channel broadcasting your ideas, opinions, products onto a
billion channel internet...

Now, have you started your blog yet? Can't you see why
it's a great way of getting these kinds of ideas out of
your head and into cyber space where they properly belong.
It's a perfect way of expressing yourself. At the very least,
it will keep all flight departures on hold for a little while.
