Happy Mother's Day to all the Mothers out
there and to the people who are glad they
have one!

Media RSS, Safari RSS and Laura Bush!
or Will RSS Ever Reach Prime Time?

Recent developments have again, brought RSS to the forefront
but will RSS ever reach Prime Time? Will it finally go mainstream?

For those who are keeping a close eye on recent RSS/Blogging
developments, interest is building again. Some new developments
worth noting would include - Yahoo's new Media RSS and
Safari RSS which is packaged in the new Mac OS X.

o MediaRSS

Yahoo's Media RSS is a new RSS module that will make it easy to handle,
move and syndicate multimedia files or content across the web.
We already have enclosures for audio files (Podcasting) and
images but Yahoo's Media RSS will accommodate TV, video
clips, movies, etc.

This new RSS feature will be integrated into Yahoo Video
Search Engine - making it easy to find and access all your
favorite video files and clips. It will no doubt bring RSS
closer to Primetime - no pun intended!
Media RSS .

o Safari RSS

Another recent development is the introduction of Safari RSS
in the New Mac OS X.

Basically, the new MAC operating system gives us an easy-to-use
navigational bar that lets you browse, manage, search and view all
your RSS Feeds. It convenient, easy and puts all that great RSS
content at your fingertips. Keeping up on all your favorite
subjects doesn't get any easier than this!

There is one other recent event that should be noted: Laura
Bush's stand out performance at the press corps’ dinner
on May 5. This performance was covered and reported by some
bloggers in their blogs.

It points out one direction RSS/Blogs could go in order for it
to enter Primetime. RSS desperately needs a mainstream audience.
In order for it to really become a major communication factor
- it must reach and be used by the ordinary 'jane/joe' on the street.

Elitism is fine, but it won't build you a world where everyone is using
RSS/Blogs! Some Polls have put the usage of RSS/Blogs at 20% of the
surfing web.

And speaking of elitism - one can't help but ask - where the heck
is Google in all of this?

It boggles the mind to think that Google after having bought
Blogger.com -- is not giving RSS some serious consideration.

Nature of the beast, RSS/Blogs contain some of the most
current, relevant information that's on the web. Why isn't
Goggle using it? How hard can it be to list rss feeds in
their current search results even just as an add-on?
How hard would it be to put an RSS feed search button on their
main page? They give pfd files in some of their results - how
much would it take to index and give relevant rss content or feeds.

Is it a conscious decision NOT to use RSS? Why? It can't
be the silly old issue of which format to use, rss or atom?
People working with Google are using the same internet,
and at last count, they're still living on the same
planet -- so why isn't Google using RSS?

You don't get to where Google has gotten by being dumb!
Is there more going on that the public is not aware off?
What's going on behind the scenes?

And the major question -- Is Google using RSS secretly
in their algorithm?

Everyone knows the kind of deal making/fuss made over their PR
rating system. Maybe they are using RSS in their algorithm
and have wisely keep it quiet this time? Maybe rss/blogs
are playing a bigger role in Google than most people realize?

Pure speculation or is it? Many marketers have noticed you
can 'gatecrash' or 'backdoor' your way into Google by using
an RSS feed or blog like Blogger.com and pinging your
posts.

I have personally put keywords into Google index in less
than 48 hours using this method. Just using blogger.com where
I host the feed and blog on my own site. Using a site like
Bloglines or My.yahoo to ping or call up your rss feed - does
produce a quick response in Google. Every rss post seems to
have a 'googlebot' permanently stuck to its rear end!

But a more visible form of RSS Search is needed in Google unless
they want to keep losing ground.

RSS/Blogs are not just a trend and they are not going to go away,
in fact all recent developments indicates its gearing up to really
enter Prime Time (the use of rss video, podcasting, mediaRSS,
Safari RSS, Even CNN does a Blog Report!...)

Will the final acceptance come if the next Windows arrives with a
built in RSS feature similar to the one offered by Mac OS?

If you don't deliver the goods, folks will just go elsewhere to
find what they want. The marketplace will take care of you and put
you in your place.

The smart people at Google and Microsoft must realize they have to
deal with RSS or lose ground in a very competitive world. They must
know they have to take steps to accommodate this new way of passing
'content' around the web or suffer the consequences. They must know
they have to provide this extra convenience for their patrons...

Or RSS will deal with them.

......

Hope you have a great week!
