CES Consumer Electronics Show for 2009 opened on Jan. 8th and runs until
the 11th. Due to the poor economy, attendance is reported to be down
this year. Considering most of the electronic gadgets and gizmos shown
at the CES are mostly luxury/entertainment items - many coming with
some hefty prices.
Besides, how many golfers would pop down $500 bucks for handheld
GPS gadget that helps you play golf by telling you exactly where
you are on the green, distance from the hole and the best way
to take your shots. In tough times, many will taking their shots
as they see them.
Toshiba Qosmio X305 at the CES.
Still, it is fascinating to view some of these future technical
marvels even with heftly price tags. Such as the Asus W90 gaming
laptop with an 18.4 inch 1080p display, sporting two ATI Mobility
Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPUs, Core 2 Duo processor and the world's first
three RAM slots.
Or Toshiba's Qosmio X305-Q725 series of gaming laptops that will
turn a few heads with configurations starting at $1,449 and up.
Or how about LG's OLED screens (Which stands for organic light-emitting
diodes) that produces eye-popping high-resolution images on very
thin screens. The Kodak technology is so expensive even very small
displays cost 1000's of dollars to produce but it's pointing the
way to what we will all be watching in 5 years or less.
Then you have other new products being introduced such as
AMD unveiling a whole series of new mobile graphics chips.
These ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series will only raise
the bar for high-end graphics in mobile computers and gaming
laptops.
Countless other new products are being introduced at this
CES show and it is worth viewing - in person or online.
The only sour note this year besides the poor economy
is the absence of Apple's ailing CEO Steve Jobs... it's
like trying to have a wedding with the groom missing.
No fun at all.
